CHAMPION - John L. Barnhart Jr., 84, went home to the Lord on Sunday evening, Sept. 30, 2012, at Autumn Hills Care Center.
He was born March 3, 1928, in Aleppo, Pa., the son of the late Luther Oscar and Docie E. Miller Barnhart.
John was a 1946 graduate of Aleppo High School, where he was two-time captain and quarterback of the Pioneers high school football team. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950-52 during the Korean War. He worked for nearly 40 years for the U.S. Postal Service in Warren as a mail carrier, retiring in 2000.

John was a member of Champion Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder, deacon and trustee. He was an avid reader of the Bible, loved playing the guitar and was an avid football fan, especially of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He and his wife, Martha, enjoyed square dancing and were members of the Crosstrailers Square Dancing Club. John was a member of the American Legion, umpired with the Champion Athletic Youth Baseball league and was a faithful blood donor with the American Red Cross for many years.
John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Martha Ann McCracken Barnhart, whom he married on Jan. 23, 1954; seven children, Dr. David (Janet) Barnhart of Brecksville, Ricky (Laureen) Barnhart of Hilliard, Steve (Carlene) Barnhart of Mecca, Mark Barnhart of Columbus, Barbara Bonanno of Independence, Dr. John W. (Kelly) Barnhart of Champion and Suzanne (Dave) Bryant of Ridgeway, Wis.; 14 grandchildren, Alicia, Jessica and Alexandra Barnhart, Steven, Michelle, Mandy, Kyle and Kristen Barnhart, Andrew Backs, Isabel Bonanno, Brooke, Michael and Matthew Barnhart and Charlotte Bryant; one sister, Dorothy "Sis" (Jim) Montecalvo of Washington, Pa., and two sisters-in-law, Ethel Barnhart of West Farmington and Dorothy Miller of Wheeling.
Six brothers, Walter Gene Barnhart, Woodrow Miller and Claude, Lloyd, and Charles and Raymond Barnhart; and three sisters, Naomi Hennen, Edna Plants and Kathryn Huffman, all preceded him in death.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Roberts-Clark Chapel in Warren and from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday at Champion Presbyterian Church, where the funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Pastor Marvin Barney will officiate. Burial will be at Meadowbrook Memorial Park in Champion.
