I am deeply saddened lately by the news regarding the financial situation for the SCOPE locations of Trumbull County. I am a 60-year-old woman who works full time but occasionally have taken days off and visited SCOPE in Cortland, as I have a friend who belongs.
I see the many friends she has made and who are glad to be her friend. I see many women and men having someplace to go and enjoy other senior citizens company and having a good time with the activities. Many are widows and widowers and need the companionship of others so as not to feel lonely and need to keep active in their bodies and minds with these games and activities.
I witnessed them all trying to pitch in and make, bake or sew articles to sell to make money just to pay the utilities in the building to keep the doors of it open so they will have a fun and friendly place to keep coming to every day. I listened to them this week telling each other how much SCOPE means to them.
My heart is breaking that the people in the community of Cortland do not help support this organization in some way to keep this Cortland SCOPE open and going. I am a widow and will someday be retiring and would look forward to being a blessed member of SCOPE and now that opportunity may never be an option for me if the funds are not there to keep it open and going.
What can some of you do to help? Please do anything you can for these wonderful seniors that want to have friends and socialize. I have made friends with them and they are kind, caring SCOPE members who need the community's help.
