REPORT CARD

September 16, 2012
By DANA SULONEN , Tribune Chronicle | dsulonen@TribToday.com

QUARTERBACK: B

Kurt Hess did not have his best day, but he still managed to throw for 183 yards. He made a very sketchy decision in the second half, and luckily the play was ruled incomplete and not a fumble. The play didn't matter in the end, but at the time it could have cost the Penguins.

RUNNING BACKS: A

Without Jamaine Cook and Torrian Pace, the Penguins could very well have had their first loss of the year. Cook rushed for 161 yards and three touchdowns. Pace added 33 yards and one touchdown. Without a doubt the MVPs of the game.

RECEIVERS: C

Tight end Will Shaw had a very rough day, dropping two passes that he doesn't normally drop. Andre Stubbs had some nice plays, but wasn't used to his full ability. Christian Bryan was covered pretty heavily at all times.

OFFENSIVE LINE: B

The line gave up the first sack of the season to Hess, and he felt a lot of pressure through the day. However, there were times that when a run was called, the line moved in perfect unison, giving great alleys for Cook to run through.

DEFENSIVE LINE: B

Probably the best unit of the defense. Kyle Sirl had the game of his career with two sacks and the line limited Albany to 123 yards rushing. There were times though the line looked dominated.

LINEBACKERS: C

Travis Williams saved this corps from a "D". Though not starting, he came up with six tackles, five solo, and had some of the hardest hits of the game. Teven Williams added another six tackles. This unit needs to stop giving up easy, short screen passes over the middle.

SECONDARY: D

The secondary needs to be thankful that Albany had two huge drops that would have led to touchdowns, or the Penguins would have their first loss. The unit was beat numerous times through the day on long routes. And then there was the flea flicker. This unit needs cleaned up.

COACHING: B

The play calling was a little conservative for my liking. Cook was running great and the receivers weren't having their best day, but only on the first series did YSU really dedicate to keeping the Great Danes off balance with reverses or play actions.

SPECIAL TEAMS: A

One of the plays of the game was the blocked punt by Ali Cheaib. David Brown connected on one field goal and all four PATs and Nick Liste had two good punts, one that pinned Albany inside the 20.
