Robert B. Woodfin Jr. 1935-2012

SELMA, Ala. - Robert Barron Woodfin Jr., 76, more affectionately called ''Woody,'' departed life Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, in Selma after a long illness.

Bob was born Nov. 17, 1935, in Selma, the son of Robert B. Woodfin and Eleanor Croom Woodfin.

A member of the University of Alabama golf team, Bob graduated in 1958 with a B.S. in geology.

In 1959, he joined the Alabama National Guard.

In 1962, he was the Alabama amateur golf champion; then in 1963, he returned to the championship as runner-up and in the following year toured on the PGA circuit.

In 1965, he became the assistant golf pro at Acadia Country Club in Cleveland and two years later became the head golf professional at Tanglewood Country Club in Chagrin Falls.

In 1969, he married Carolyn Joyce Ashley, and the following year became head golf professional at the Trumbull Country Club in Warren, from where in 2003 he retired after 43 years of service. He then relocated to West Palm Beach, Fla., where he continued to teach the sport he loved.

While living in Warren, he enjoyed working with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Boy Scouts of America and was sincerely dedicated to Believers' Christian Fellowship.

Bob is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Woodfin Pack of Warren; five grandchildren, Adrianna (Adam) Mayes, Ashley Yobe, Alexis Yobe, Taylor Pack and Hunter Pack; two great-granddaughters, Jaidyn and Sophia; and a great-grandson, Dominic. Also surviving are a sister, Coralie (Charles) Frazer Jr. of Selma; and a sister-in-law, Marty Ashley of West Palm Beach.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Joyce Ashley Woodfin in 2004; as well as his parents and a brother-in-law, Robert Ashley.

The family appreciates all the great caregivers at Park Place Nursing Home in Selma, who took such wonderful care of Bob.

A celebration of life for Bob will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 15 at McFarland & Son Funeral Home. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
