MetroParks offer youth program

Mill Creek MetroParks Warriors, a program for children ages 7 to 12, will be offered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Slippery Rock Pavilion, Robinson Hiill Drive, Youngstown.

Led by recreation program coordinator Angela McGrady, a former park ranger at Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the program focuses on healthy competition and building healthy bodies through educational outdoor games.

The cost is $8 for Mahoning County residents and $10 for non-residents, and participants are encouraged to bring water. To register or for more information, call 330-740-7106.

Bands play Warrior benefit

Three bands will play a fundraiser Saturday for Wounded Warriors and Gold Star Mothers at the Yankee Lake Ballroom, 1814 state Route 7, Yankee Lake.

Doors open at 3 p.m. Saturday, and a mini-buffet will be available starting at 6 p.m. The music starts at 6:30 p.m. Gary Pirrung & Sam Trina, the Tyler and Jet Jenkins Band and The Sensations scheduled to perform.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased in advance by calling Gary Jenkins at 330-876-1207 or at the door.

Polka host honored by fellow broadcasters

''Happy Polkaland'' radio host Larry Walk will be inducted into the Broadcasters Hall of Fame in Akron on Sunday.

Walk has been hosting his polka radio show in the Mahoning Valley for 48 years on various stations. The program, which he now co-hosts with his wife Diana, can be heard from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays on WKTX-AM (830) and from 1 to 4 p.m. on WSOM-AM (600) .

Walk was inducted into the International Polka Association Hall of Fame in 1994 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the United States Polka Association in 2011. Earlier this year, he was named Man of the Year by the Penn-Ohio Polka Pals.
