George E. Lanterman Sr. 1937-2012

BERLIN CENTER - George E. Lanterman Sr., 75, died Wednesday evening, Aug. 29, 2012, at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

George was born Feb. 8, 1937, in Canfield, the son of the late Frank J. and Laura J. Cochel Lanterman, and was a lifelong area resident.

George graduated from Canfield High School in 1955. He was a U.S. Army veteran and had served as an honor guard for President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

George had been employed at Baird Brothers Sawmills for more than 40 years.

He was an avid gardener and loved sports. He was a Browns and Ohio State fan, and especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in sports and their many activities, and also watching his son coach.

Besides his wife, the former Marie E. Bennett, whom he married Sept. 23, 1961, he leaves five children, George E. (Jackie) Lanterman Jr. of Mineral Ridge, Vicky (Louis) Palumbo of Poland, Diane (Thomas) Brown and Frank (Cindy) Lanterman, all of Canfield, and Patricia Lanterman-Martin of Austintown; 15 grandchildren, Brendon, Cory, Seth, Jordan, Zachary, Eva, Danielle, Jarod, Kyle, Ciera, Austin, Anna, Megan, Dylan and Dana; and nine brothers and sisters, Frank E. (Nancy) Lanterman of Berlin Center, Dolores Yeager of Newton Falls, Jack (Virginia) Lanterman of Greenford, Charles Lanterman of Berlin Center, Evelyn Prozy and William (Kathy) Lanterman, all of Diamond, Phyllis (James) Harmon, James (Rosemary) Lanterman and Dale (Linda) Lanterman, all of Canfield.

Besides his parents, George was preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Pike.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Berlin United Methodist Church, 15611 Akron Canfield Road, Berlin Center. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Canfield Chapel, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests material tributes take the form of contributions to the Youngstown Foundation, Hines Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 1162, Youngstown, OH 44501.
