NILES - Alta V. Callihan, 72, passed away peacefully at 12:50 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012, at the residence.
Alta was born April 7, 1940, in Richmondale, the daughter of Madison R. and Jewel Garvin Holbrook Sr., and came to Niles as a child.
Alta attended the Niles City Schools and Niles McKinley High School, attended the Evening Light Apostolic Church, and enjoyed playing bingo and traveling to Mountaineer Casino.
She was employed as a nursing assistant for 25 years at the former Glenn View Manor Nursing Home, Mineral Ridge, and retired in 2005.
Alta is survived by her mother, Jewel Holbrook of Niles; special friend, Dominic; four daughters and a son, Kim (Mark Brewer) Callihan of Girard, Tracy (Jason) Martin of Hubbard, Michelle (Stanley) Palmer of Niles, Gayle Lee of Niles and Michael Callihan of Niles; four sisters and a brother, Diane (Ralph) Cevetto of Niles, Linda Ragozzine of Springboro, Libby (Joseph) Mordent of Niles, Gayle Savin of Springboro and Madison (Frances) Holbrook Jr. of Niles; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Madison R. Holbrook Sr.; a grandson, Robert Lee III; and a brother, Robert G. Holbrook.
At Alta's request, a private funeral service was held and there were no calling hours.
