CHAMPION - Thelma Mae McLean, 92 , formerly of Niles, passed away on her 92nd birthday, Saturday afternoon, Aug. 25, 2012, at Windsor House of Champion, where she had resided for the past nine months.
She was born Aug. 25, 1920, in Warren, the daughter of the late Watson Reed and Hallie Ellen Tomlinson Groves. She had been a lifetime Trumbull county resident, living in Niles since 1953.
Thelma was a 1938 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Niles, where she served on the diaconate and was a member of the Adah Circle and the Class Ruth.
She was a well-known seamstress and enjoyed all types of crafts. Thelma made many afghans, quilts and stuffed dolls and toys, which she exhibited and won many awards and place ribbons for at the Canfield Fair. Spring and summer were always spent working in her flower garden, which she greatly loved and also for which she received recognition and awards.
Her husband, David W. McLean, whom she married July 6, 1940, preceded in death Feb. 15, 1991. One son-in-law, John Karovic, and a grandson, Matthew McKnight, also preceded her in death.
Thelma is survived by her seven children, June Karovic of Cortland, David (Linda) McLean of Grand Junction, Colo., Lynn (Dr. Thomas F.) Young of Kinsman, Denise (Keith) McKnight of Wadsworth, William (Pam) McLean of Olympia, Wash., Roberta (Robert) Hubler of Dayton and Gerald (Lisa) McLean of Wadsworth; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the 11 a.m. funeral services Wednesday at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Roberts-Clark Chapel in Warren. The Rev. Dr. Bernard Oakes will officiate. Entombment will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in Vienna.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Camp Christian, c/o First Christian Church of Niles, 33 Arlington Ave., Niles OH 44446, or to the Animal Welfare League, 545 Brunstetter Road, Warren, OH 44481.
