CORTLAND - Ethel "Vera" Smith, 87, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, at Shepherd of the Valley in Niles.
She was born June 3, 1925, in Queens, W.Va., the daughter of the late Gilbert Osborn and the late Zella M. Steele Osborn.
Vera was a graduate of Johnston High School and worked most of her life as a homemaker. She did work outside of her home as a bookkeeper for Cortland Banks in the '60s and '70s. She was a past member of Cortland Church of God and had attended Cortland Church of the Nazarene.

Her husband, Robert L. Smith, whom she married in 1972, preceded her in death in 1977.
She is survived by her two children, Leta Garrett of Jacksonville, Fla., and Robert (Deborah) Burn of Warren; and by a grandson, Nicholas Burn.
Vera was preceded in death by five brothers, Ernest, Leonard, Mason, Tom and Denley Osborn; a sister, Rita Zicafoose; and a granddaughter, Daphne Garrett.
Private family services were held Saturday morning.
Burial was in the Hillside Cemetery in Cortland.
