CHAMPION - As the superintendent of the Trumbull Career and Technical Center Board of Education prepares to retire, he will also be training his successor.

The TCTC Board of Education on Thursday unanimously accepted the resignation of Wayne McClain, who has served as superintendent since February 2002, and approved his recommendation to name Jason Gray, the center's director, as interim superintendent.

McClain recently announced plans to retire on July 31, 2013, and the board officially accepted his resignation on Thursday. He said his plan calls for him to work "alongside" Gray over the next year.

"I think it's a smart move," said Robert Faulkner, TCTC board member. "It will make the transition easier, smoother for everyone."

The board also named Mary Flint, who has served as supervisor of guidance and business, as TCTC's new director.

The only position that needs to be advertised and filled is the one Flint is vacating.

McClain, 69, came to TCTC after retiring as superintendent at the Trumbull County Educational Service Center. He has 48 years in education, 29 years as superintendent.

Gray, a former social studies teacher, also has been at TCTC since February 2002.

McClain said that the director's position at TCTC is comparable to a high school principal's post.
