Man charged with stabbing his brother

Suspect tells police victim stabbed himself

YOUNGSTOWN - A South Side man was arrested on the charge of felonious assault after police say he stabbed his brother with a box cutter late Wednesday.

Hence Cheirs, 54, 85 Ellenwood Ave., is expected to be arraigned today in Municipal Court. He has been in the Mahoning County Jail since he was arrested about 10:10 p.m. Wednesday at his home.

Police were called out on a report of a fight. When they arrived at the home, they found Cheirs on the porch, and he told them his brother was down the street.

Officers then walked down the street and found his brother, Tony Cheirs, 49, of the same address, lying on the sidewalk in front of 95 Ellenwood Ave. and bleeding heavily.

A witness told police Tony Cheirs knocked on his door, told him he had been stabbed by his brother, then walked away and collapsed. He was unresponsive when police found him on the sidewalk, the report states.

Tony Cheirs was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment. His condition was unknown Thursday.

Hence Cheirs was placed into handcuffs. While being cuffed, Hence told officers that Tony had stabbed himself, the report states.

Police followed a trail of blood leading from the front porch through the front room and into the kitchen, where they found a blue and silver box cutter on the floor.

The report states bleach had been placed on the floor and kitchen table.
