Library hosts Civil War talk

Civil War historian and author Lester Horwitz will speak at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. N.W., Warren.

Horwitz is the author of "The Longest Raid of the Civil War," which chronicles the true story of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan's raid into Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio in July 1863. Horwitz will discuss the unique characteristics of this daring raid and its effect on the Civil War.

Admission is free and funding is provided by the the Ohio Humanities Council, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. For more information, call 330-399-8807, Ext. 128.

Polish fest seeks pierogi eaters

PolishYoungstown is accepting applications for its third Pierogi Eating Contest, which will Aug. 25 as part of Zabawa - Polish Style Party at Austintown Plaza, 6000 Mahoning Ave., Austintown.

Participants will compete to see who can eat the most buttered dumplings in three minutes. Prizes will be awarded for the top three places. The entry fee is $10 and each contestant will receive a pierogi T-shirt. Zabawa runs from 5 p.m. to midnight, and the contest will start around 8:30 p.m.

MetroParks offer Idora tour

Mill Creek MetroParks is offering a ''Discover Idora Neighborhood'' tour starting at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The tour will focus on the Idora neighborhood and explore the history and future of this South Side quarter, highlighting the Ford Nature Center, historic Idora neighborhood homes and Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation's revitalization programs.

The buses will depart from Youngstown Playhouse, at 600 Playhouse Lane off Glenwood Avenue, at 2 p.m. Seating is limited. For more information, call 330-702-3000.
