MARS HILLS, N.C. - Carrie Luther, 98, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and friend, quietly went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 28, 2012.
She was born on Sept. 6, 1913, in Mars Hill, and graduated from Madison County High School.
She attended Mars Hill College and later enrolled at Blanton's Business College in Asheville where she met James Vernon Luther. Vernon and Carrie English were married in Greenville, N.C., on July 28, 1937. Vernon, her husband for 69 years, passed away on May 20, 2007.
Carrie and Vernon resided in Andrews, N.C., Newport News, Va., Hickory, N.C., and Braceville before settling in Southington in 1953. They built and managed a mobile home park in Southington. In 1974, they sold the mobile home park and returned to Mars Hill where they acquired a number of rental homes in Asheville and the surrounding areas. They have lived in Carrie's beloved mountains since that time.
For those who knew her, Carrie will be remembered for her kind and generous spirit to family, friends and neighbors throughout her 98 years. She was known for feeding large numbers of visitors on the spur of the moment, and the Luther home was always a center for family activities. She was active in both California Creek Baptist Church and Bright Hope Laurel Methodist Church in Mars Hill for many years.
Carrie was the 10th of 16 children born to William Henry English and Mary Jane Metcalf English. She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Luther of Asheville, and son, James (Rebecca) Luther of Richmond, Va. Grandchildren include Cheryl's children, Lorraine Ballinger of Youngstown and Daniel Pernice of Champion, and Jim and Becky's daughter, Kristin Morgan of Atlanta. Great-grandchildren include Lori's daughters, Kaitlyn and Jesika, and Dan and Erin's son, Carter Pernice. A granddaughter, Jessica Pernice, born on their anniversary, preceded them to heaven. A great-great-grandson, Aidyn Pernice, was born March 12, 2012, to Kaitlyn. Carrie is also survived by her youngest sister, Gertrude Jones of Emporia, Va.
