NILES - Hazel C. Vandegrifft, 87, of Hilda Drive, Warren, passed away at 10:50 a.m. Saturday, July 21, 2012, in Autumn Hills Care Center.
Mrs. Vandegrifft was born April 14, 1925, in Warren, a daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Bowers Christy, spending her lifetime here on Bolindale Hill.
She attended the former Bolindale Nazarene Church and the Howland school system. She had been employed for 18 years by Howland Schools as a crossing guard, and was the first woman grand marshal of the Bolindale-Deforest Homecoming in 1974. She was also a member of the Blue Star Mothers and Booster Club, and participated in several of the activities of the Bolindale Deforest organization.

She enjoyed traveling, camping and winters in Florida for 18 years, and remained active throughout her lifetime.
Her husband of 58 years, Wayne W. Vandegrifft, whom she married Nov. 22, 1946, preceded her in death on Nov. 16, 2003. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Emma Lou Hilterman, Margaret Holland and infant sister Sophanna; and three brothers, Marshall, Quay and Chester Christy.
Hazel is survived by her daughter, Cynthia A. (Larry) Nicula, with whom she had made her home; a son, Dennis W., of Warren; three granddaughters, Christy Henderson, Melissa Leslie and Melinda Henderlight; and two great grandsons, Dayne Henderson and Michael Vandegrifft.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Robert P. McDermott Memorial Home, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Revs. Thomas Hilderman and James Baer officiating.
Burial will be Crown Hill Burial Park.
