Police: Man shot on East Side of Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN - A Bennington Avenue man was found shot in the leg about 6:20 p.m. Monday behind an 818 Bennington Ave. home.

Officers found James Stewart, 41, when they were called to the area for a report of a man down with a gunshot wound.

Stewart told police he was walking on Bennington Avenue when a car pulled up behind and someone fired several shots. He said the car then headed toward McGuffey Road.

Police found two spent shell casings. Stewart was taken to the St. Elizabeth Health Center to be treated for his wound.

Man pleads guilty to attempted rape

YOUNGSTOWN - A South Side man pleaded guilty to charges of attempted rape, assault and kidnapping Tuesday as jury selection was under way in his trial.

Sanjuan Smith, 43, of Almyra Avenue, will be sentenced Aug. 28 by Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge James Evans. Jury selection for his trial began Monday.

Smith was accused of holding a woman against her will in June 2011 and forcing her to have sex with him. The woman escaped to the police station, told officers what happened, and they arrested Smith.

Smith originally had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, but a court-ordered evaluation that was completed in April found he was competent to stand trial.

Police: Man calls 911 for being awakened

YOUNGSTOWN - A city man was arrested late Monday on a charge of misuse of 911 after police say he was mad his girlfriend woke him up to ask what he wanted for dinner.

Police were called to the home of Edward Frazier II, 59, 11 Thornton Ave., about 11:55 p.m. for a report of a couple arguing. When they got there, Frazier told police his girlfriend tried to talk to him while he was sleeping and that she was harassing him.

The girlfriend told police that Frazier had fallen asleep after he was drinking, and she was cooking for herself and two children when she woke him up to ask him if he wanted anything to eat. He then yelled at her and called 911, reports state.

Report: Teenager injured in crash

AUSTINTOWN - A 17-year-old female is being treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center after an accident on Turner Road about 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Police Chief Bob Gavalier said the female was driving when she lost control of the car, hit a guard rail, veered to the other side of the road and struck a tree. Gavalier said they are still trying to determine how she lost control of the car.

Man arrested with gun in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN - Police took a loaded .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun from a man on the West Side late Monday afternoon who told officers he pulled it after he was almost hit by a car.

Clifford Cross, 21, 2561 Tyrell St., is in the Mahoning County Jail on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon after he was arrested in the 100 block of Division Street about 4:45 p.m.

Police were called to Salt Springs Road and Division Street for a report of a man waving a gun around. An officer spotted Cross and took him into custody.

Cross told police he pulled the gun because a car almost hit him. He said he carries a gun for protection because he has been shot before and fears for his life.

Power outages reported throughout Trumbull

Residents across Trumbull County were reporting power outages Tuesday night, a 911 supervisor said.

He said that although the exact cause had not been confirmed, officials believe it could have been due to heavy use of air conditioners. Temperatures remained in the 90s throughout the day and a heat advisory had been issued.

Outages were confirmed in Hubbard and McDonald, and several other communities also were affected, according to 911.
