NEWTON FALLS - Leona Merritt, 94, of Newton Falls, entered into eternal rest on Friday, July 6, 2012, at Laurie Ann Nursing Home.
On June 30, 1918, in Detroit, Charles and Emma Mayes Berendt were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Leona. She was the youngest of their seven children.
She was a 1936 graduate of Denby High School in Detroit. This is where she met and then married her high school sweetheart, Charles Merritt, on Jan. 18, 1941, and from this union they had a son, Charles, and daughters, Janice, Kerry and Donna.
Leona attended St. Mary and St. Joseph Church in Newton Falls and was a life member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Ravenna. In her spare time, she enjoyed embroidery.
She resided in Newton Falls since 2004 and was formerly of South Euclid.
Cherished memories of Leona will be carried on by her daughters, Janice McDaries of Newton Falls, Kerry Buehner of Tampa, Fla., and Donna (Ellis) Moose of Poinciana, Fla.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and on Leona's birthday this year, her great-great-grandson, Jacob, was born.
Preceding her in death was her beloved husband of 54 years, Charles, who passed away in 1995; her son, Charles, who passed away in 1982; four brothers; two sisters; and son-in-laws Spencer McDaries and Robert Buehner.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Highland Drive Cemetery in Brecksville, with Pastor Arnold Edmondson officiating.
