WARREN -First Book-Trumbull County has been visiting a number of locations in the area to provide hundreds of new, free books for children attending community meals and nutrition sites.

Ellen Finan, chair of First Book-Trumbull County, said the "Food for the Brain Campaign" being held this summer, seeks to reach children for low-income households with reading materials for all ages.

She said that in addition to providing books, the program also seeks to make more people aware of First Book and what it does.

The non-profit organization has passed out books at St. Vincent DePaul Society Dining Hall and Niles Community Suppers provided by St Stephen Church and First Presbyterian Church.

The campaign also plans to visit a few summer food service program sites, collaborating with the Warren City Schools food services department

"Reading feeds the mind. First Book's mission is provide access to books for children who might otherwise not have them at home," Finan said.

She said if enough funds are raised, the the program will continue next year.

The summer lunch program has many sites around the city each day.

Finan said plans are to distribute 400 books to children at the different sites. She said many volunteers helped distribute the books at the site where the nutrition programs are held. Finan said each child had a name sticker placed inside their new book.
