UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Mahoning Valley Scrappers' bats were mostly silent Friday night, as they managed just five hits in a 4-0 loss to the State College Spikes.
Juan Romero, who had three home runs in the first two games of the season for the Scrappers, went 0 for 3 with three strikeouts.
Only Charlie Valerio (two hits), Jairo Kelly, Hunter Jones and Robel Garcia managed hits for Mahoning Valley.
State College starter Clay Holmes allowed three hits in five innings. He struck out five and issued one walk.
Scrappers starter Robbie Aviles (0-1) allowed three earned runs and five hits in four innings. He walked two and struck out one.
Jacob Stallings doubled in two runs in the bottom of the third inning to give the Spikes a 3-0 lead.
The second of three games in the series begins tonight at 7:05.
