GIRARD - A Vienna woman who authorities believe started a shootout with her husband last week at their Warren Sharon Road home is being held in the Trumbull County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bond.
Brooke Hoffman, 38, of 4499 Warren Sharon Road, entered no plea Monday at her initial appearance in Girard Municipal Court on two second-degree felonious assault charges and one first-degree felony drug trafficking charge.
She is set for a preliminary hearing Wednesday.
Authorities called the incident a lover's quarrel. Brooke and Craig Hoffman, who also is facing charges stemming from the incident, were legally separated in April, and both were shot in the confrontation.
Craig Hoffman is facing a drug trafficking charge. He has entered no plea and has a preliminary hearing the same day.
Brooke Hoffman was released from St. Elizabeth Health Center Sunday and booked into the Trumbull County Jail.
Police believe Brooke Hoffman shot Craig Hoffman first and then her husband shot her behind the left ear during a struggle between the two over a gun.
Craig Hoffman was shot in the leg and shoulder area, according to reports.
Craig Hoffman told police his wife had tried to kill him and that she was in the bedroom.
When police entered the bedroom, they found Brooke Hoffman "laying face down on the bed with her left arm under her chest and her right arm over her head," and that she was unresponsive to their commands.
One officer used his Taser to shock Hoffman until another officer told him she was unconscious, reports said.
Craig Hoffman told police that his wife had read text messages and came in and shot him.
Officers said the numerous guns and drugs, including what appeared to be crack cocaine, were discovered immediately after the shooting, which prompted investigators to seek a search warrant.
The drug charges stemmed from a search warrant obtained by police after they entered his home following the shooting and saw evidence of drug trafficking.
According to an inventory receipt, some 50 items were returned with the search warrant including numerous weapons, ammunition, suspected drugs and drug paraphernalia, a propane torch, bloody clothing and blood samples collected on swabs that forensic experts can use for DNA testing, a plastic organizer containing glass pipes and cell phone.
The couple's violent history included a 2008 incident when Brooke Hoffman rammed into her neighbor's home with a truck looking for her husband and Craig Hoffman head butting his wife the year before.
