New this week on DVD and Blu-ray:
''Safe House'' - This action tale ended up becoming one of the biggest box-office hits for both Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds as it earned about $125 million in theaters. Its success was surprising because it played like an imitation of Washington's frequent collaborations with director Tony Scott.
Washington stars as a rogue CIA agent who's been selling secrets for the last decade until turning himself in to the U.S. Embassy in South Africa. Reynolds is a low-level agent who has to decide whether Washington is the traitor his superiors claim or a man capable of exposing greater corruption within the agency.
The DVD comes with four featurettes - ''Making Safe House,'' ''Hand-to-Hand Action,'' ''Building the Rooftop Chase'' and ''Inside the CIA.'' The Blu-ray edition adds additional featurettes on the fight scenes, the Cape Town setting and a look at the safe house attack sequence as well as Universal's interactive UltraViolet features. (Universal Studios Home Entertainment, $29.98 DVD, $34.98 Blu-ray)
''Act of Valor'' - Active duty U.S. Navy SEALs are cast alongside actors in a movie that purports to show how the elite unit responds to terrorist threats. The SEALs are sent in to recover a kidnapped CIA operative, which leads to information that could have global ramifications.
All versions come with six deleted scenes and a commentary track by directors Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh. The Blu-ray edition includes interviews with seven of the SEALs and seven featurettes. (20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, $29.98 DVD, $39.99 Blu-ray)
''John Carter'' - This big-budget adaptation of the beloved Edgar Rice Burroughs science fiction tale took a critical and commercial beating when it opened in theaters earlier this year. Disney execs lost their jobs, and the company blamed it for first quarter financial disappointments. Taylor Kitsch plays the title character, a Civil War veteran who finds himself transported to Mars and facing off against assorted creatures.
There are plenty of extras, including a commentary track, a deleted scene, multiple featurettes and a digital copy of the film. (Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, $29.99 DVD, $39.99 DVD/Blu-ray combo, $49.99 3D Blu-ray / Blu-ray / DVD / digital copy combo)
''Journey 2: The Mysterious Island 3D'' - Josh Hutcherson (''The Hunger Games'') is the only returning cast member for this sequel, which has him battling giant bees, lizards and other creatures with Dwayne Johnson and Vanessa Hudgens. Extras include deleted scenes, a gag reel and an introduction by Hutcherson. (Warner Home Video, $28.98 DVD, $35.99 Blu-ray, $44.98 3D Blu-ray/Blu-ray / DVD / digital copy combo)

Michelle Monaghan, Kathy Baker and Michael Shannon co-star. (20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, $22.98 DVD, $29.99 Blu-ray)
''Bad Ass'' - Movie tough guy Danny Trejo (''Machete'') plays a forgotten Vietnam veteran thrust into the media spotlight when he protects an elderly black man from skinheads on a bus. At the same time, he has to try to solve the murder of his best friend when police refuse to help. Director Craig Moss does an audio commentary, and the disc comes with a featurette about the YouTube video that helped inspire the script. ''Rogue River'' - When a woman's car breaks down in the Oregon wilderness, she accepts a ride from a kindly older gentleman. Since the ''kindly'' man is played by Bill Moseley (''The Devil's Rejects,'' ''Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2''), this won't end well. The horror movie comes with two featurettes, ''A Look Inside the Madness'' and ''The Extra Bite.'' (Lionsgate Home Entertainment, $26.98 DVD)
''The Three Stooges Ultimate Collection'' - Just in time for Father's Day gift giving is this 20-disc set that contains 60 hours of slapstick antics. There's 190 shorts, feature films and 11 hours of content that is available for the first time on DVD. (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, $95.99 DVD)
