AUSTINTOWN - A worker at the construction site of the two new elementary schools struck a gas line this morning with a back hoe leading to the evacuation of students at nearby Watson Elementary and Frank Ohl Intermediate schools.
Students were transported to Fitch High School and Austintown Middle School, but no injuries were reported.
According to school officials, the incident occurred around 9 a.m. between the construction sites of the new K-2 and 3-5 buildings on the Austintown School District campus, located between Idaho and Raccoon roads south of Mahoning Avenue.
With the coordination of Mal Culp, supervisor of operations and facilities and Austintown Local School administrators, the contractors turned off the gas at the main with no further threat to students or workers, school officials said.
Austintown Fire Department, Dominion East Ohio and the Mahoning County Health Department were called to the site to verify that all buildings and the campus area was safe for students and staff to re-enter and remain in the buildings for the rest of the day.
The Health Department also collaborated with our Food Service Department to ensure the safety of the students to remain in the building with only cold running water as long as soap and hand sanitizer was available.
Only bag lunches will be served today.
