Awake for the second night in a row, Brody tried to ignore the blazing ache that had become the area surrounding his right-side collarbone. His right arm may as well have fallen off; he could feel nothing of it. It was an odd sensation, knowing that you were dying so slowly. Already it had been almost a week since he and his sisters had taken Risuna and Maeve's lives. He expected that the next round of captains would be coming about soon to try and slow their progress to the Capitol. He probably wouldn't get the chance to tell them who he really was before he died.
"Will? I know you're probably there, but I hope you don't mind listening. I just don't know what to do."
Despite the pain, he smiled, ruffling Destiny's hair. A grin stretched across her face as she understood his presence.
"I guess I just have a lot of questions. What do we do once we get to the Capitol? What if we do accomplish our mission; where do we go from there? This mission has consumed our whole lives, and it may be over soon. Can we live like normal people? Oh, and who are you really? I heard what Risuna said, but it really just confirmed our earlier suspicions. I can't make you tell us, so I hope you find it within yourself to trust us before-"
She cut off, but the end of the sentence was understood. He didn't have much time left. Her smile faded faster than it had appeared, her eyes moving downward sadly.
"Don't be invisible when you go, though. Don't die alone; no one deserves that, no matter what."
Before either of them could comprehend the situation, a blade wrapped around Destiny's throat threateningly and Brody was being confronted by a wide-eyed girl about his sisters' age.
"Too easy. All too easy, darlings. What do you think, Jesse? Should we make it quick?"
"You can, James, but I want to play with this one. He's fascinating, and they want him."
Captains, and higher ups, by the sound of it. Melody had roused, but she remained still where she lay, waiting for the right moment. Meanwhile, Brody reeled in shock. Jesse could see him?! The only way she could do that would be if she'd been trained to! Destiny stared at Jesse with pure hate, hands twitching toward her knife hidden in a pocket. With a chuckle, James used his free hand to grab hers and draw her attention upwards.
"Now, Dessie, there won't be any of that. You will walk away from this unscathed if you just let Jesse do her job. Such a shame you were raised so violent, we might have been friends, you and your sister."
Jesse grinned wickedly as she pounced at Brody, him trying to move fast enough and failing. Her lips caught his in a horribly sweet kiss, and he knew he'd been poisoned just a moment before he succumbed, collapsing to the ground. Melody rolled over, kicking James in the face but getting choked on some kind of powder that had her and Destiny coughing. Before they could recover, the captains vanished, leaving the twins to pass out where they sat.
