I am a man in my 50s. I have had two jobs in my life. Neither one of them has provided me with any type of health insurance benefits. I go to the doctor when I am sick and I practice good preventive health care by watching my diet, not smoking and not drinking to excess. I pay the doctor and other providers as I go.
I have a small home with a small mortgage and no car payment. Twenty-seven years ago I started an IRA that I fund on my own. At the end of the month after I pay all my bills I put a small amount in savings. I choose not to buy health insurance because I cannot afford to do so. The extra $325 a month is out of reach for me and I am fine with that. Not struggling to try and pay for the cost is my choice. If something happens to me I will deal with it at the time. Again, my choice.
If Obama's Affordable Health Care Act remains intact and is not overturned by the Supreme Court, I want to know how I am going to pay for it. I want to know why I, who has never been on any type of government assistance, collected one day of unemployment and pay for everything as I go, will now have to try and pay for something I cannot afford. How is that fair, just and more importantly, constitutional? My taxes, when it's all said and done, already amounts 40 percent. When you add up federal, state, local, FICA, real estate taxes, sales taxes and tax on gasoline I only get to keep 60 percent of what I make. Many of those taxes go to pay for things I totally disagree with as well. And since 48 percent of the people in the country pay no taxes at all, I'm paying somebody else's way also. Ridiculous.
If Obamacare stays, the feds will police it using the IRS. If at the end of the year, you cannot prove that you have bought and paid for your government mandated health insurance, they will fine you. That fine will be tacked onto your federal tax return. If your refund is less than your fine, penalties and interest will accrue until it's paid. If it's not paid standard IRS rules will apply and you will be subject to further fines and or imprisonment. This is buried in the 2,700-page health care document that Nancy Pelosi said we had to pass so we could see what's in it. Real transparent, huh?
Is this what people thought they were getting when they voted for Obama? Is this the hope and change people expected? Is this the health care reform people thought they were getting? This is, and never has been, about health care. It's simply a way for this administration to exercise more control over the taxpayers. Nothing could be more absurd. Nothing could be more unlawful.
