Artists needed for mural at Youngstown Playhouse

Artists are sought for a mural project planned for the Youngstown Playhouse building.

Sean Posey, an AmeriCorps Vista representative with the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation, said the Playhouse received a neighborhood success grant through the Raymond John Wean Foundation that is providing the bulk of funding, and the YNDC is assisting them in the project.

''We're hoping the Playhouse mural project will part of a whole beautification project aimed at the Glenwood business corridor,'' Posey said.

The YNDC was involved in a mural at the corner of Glenwood Avenue and Winona Drive in conjunction with Arts Youngstown that was created specifically to involve members of the community.

Nationally known mural artist Curtis Goldstein will meet with people from the Glenwood-Idora neighborhood later this month to get ideas for the mural he will create at the old Park Inn at the corner of Glenwood and Parkview Avenue.

For the Playhouse project, they're hoping to hear from local artists.

"We're soliciting applications from local artists especially so that it's really representative of Youngstown,'' Posey said.

Artists have until March 23 to submit a cover letter stating interest in the project and addressing how they would approach the mural if selected. Artists also need to submit a resume with three references and contact information and a CD with JPEG photos of up to 10 examples of their past work.

The selected artist will be announced on April 15 and will receive a $2,400 stipend, which includes all material costs.

Applications and materials should be sent to: Youngstown Playhouse, 600 Playhouse Lane, P.O. Box 11108, Youngstown, OH 44511. The application can be found at www.yndc.org. For more information, call Posey at 330-480-0423.
