DEPARTMENT OF AGING ACCEPTING GRANDPARENTS DAY PHOTOS: To celebrate Grandparents Day on Sept. 11, the Ohio Department of Aging is asking Ohioans to submit photos of grandparents and grandchildren sharing and learning about the events and people that made their families and their communities strong via the agency's page on Facebook.

HOME INSTEAD LOOKING FOR RECIPES: The local Home Instead Senior Care office is asking family caregivers to dig into the family recipe box to find a generational favorite dish and enter that recipe and the story about what makes the dish so special in the Craving Companionship Recipe Contest. Entries are due Sept. 15.
The contest is part of the Craving Companionship program launched to help seniors stay connected socially and eat more nutritiously. Home Instead Senior Care network research has discovered that seniors' biggest mealtime challenge is lack of companionship, organizers said.

TRUMBULL COUNTY FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM is recruiting volunteers 55 and older to tutor, mentor and strengthen reading skills in children and assist teachers in a classroom setting.
All volunteers are offered mileage, pre-placement training, supplemental auto insurance, supplemental accident insurance, an annual recognition luncheon during National Volunteer Week, free monthly luncheon and liability insurance. Income eligible volunteers are also offered paid vacation, sick time, personal time and a tax-free non-reporting monetary stipend.

The SCOPE Senior Center is seeking volunteers to help seniors in the area make lap robes and walker caddies for the Shepherd of the Valley nursing home. No sewing ability is needed, just a desire to learn. The group meets at 1 p.m. every Monday.
Another area of need is the chorus. The chorus sings at Briarfield at the Ridge once a month to entertain the residents. They also perform at the center and whenever needed in the Niles community. The chorus meets at 1 p.m. every Friday.
