Mary Ann Bortmas 1914-2009

NILES - Mary Ann Bortmas, 95, a longtime Niles resident, died at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, at the Autumn Hills Nursing Home.

She was born May 11, 1914, in Madison, Pa., to Matt and Frances Rubessa Mohorick.

Mary was a member of Saint Stephen's Church and was employed at the Niles SCOPE Center, the Ideal Department Store, Wilson Works and the Ravenna Arsenal during World War II.

She was also a member of the Niles SCOPE, and a founding member of the Girard Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary, where she was active for more than 50 years.

Mary enjoyed singing, dancing, baking, and especially activities with her grandchildren.

Mary is survived by a grandson, Carl (Melanie) Bortmas of Cortland, and seven grandaughters, Marsha (James) Pantalone of Howland, Pamela (David) Mahan of Champion, Debra (John) Madeline of Hubbard, Sarah (David) Halliday of Niles, Jeannie (Stan) Heaney of Remington, Va., Terri Voegtlin of Holland, Pa., and Barbara (Bob) Costanzo of Stowe, Pa.; a daughter-in-law, Roberta Bortmas of McDonald; 15 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Matt (Peg) Maharick of Boardman and Max (Grace) Mohorick of Mineral Ridge.

Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Howard E. Bortmas, whom she married Nov. 22, 1933. He died on May 9, 1973. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Evelyn Jean Bortmas; two sons, William R. Bortmas in February 2004 and Howard J. Bortmas on Oct. 29, 1992; and a brother, Henry Mohorick, who died during World War II.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Saint Stephen's Church with the Rev. Thomas Kraszewski officiating.

Burial will be in the Niles City Cemetery.
