MINERAL RIDGE - Richard Anthony Dando, 77, 1461 Payne St., died 1:42 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at Forum Health Northside Medical Center following a short illness.
He was born Dec. 3, 1932, in Ellwood City, Pa., a son of Antonio and Julia Rocco Dando and came to this area many years ago.
Richard was a graduate of Niles McKinley High School, and attended the Police Academy and the New Castle School of Trades. He was also an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Navy and Air Force with service time in Korea and Japan. Richard was employed over the years at the Allied Metals Co. and city of Niles Police Department. He also was security guard at the General Motors Lordstown Fabricating Plant, reserve police officer for Weathersfield and was a driver for the Sptizer Motor Co.
He was an active member of Lordstown Christian Church, where he served as chairman of the board, elder and deacon. He was a Weathersfield Township precinct committeeman, member and past grand master of the Niles Masonic Lodge, and was active in the Weathersfield DARE program for drug awareness, with talks in the school system.
Richard is survived by his wife, the former Nancy Davis, whom he married Sept. 27, 1952; and two daughters and a son, Pamela Dando at home, and Rick (Terri) Dando and Tina (John) Breese, both of Mineral Ridge. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Hailey Dando and Mia Breese, and one great-grandson, Jeremy Kibler. He also leaves two brothers and four sisters, Rosemary (Roger) Bartscher of Liberty, Frank (Verna Ann) Dando of Girard, Rita Brown of California, Judy Martin of Niles, Michael (Rosanne) Dando of Newton Falls and Debbie (Joseph) Barber of Niles.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Bernard M. Oakes officiating. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Private burial will be in Niles City Cemetery.
