Anna M. Vario 1918-2009

CHAMPION - Anna M. Vario, 91, passed away Saturday Nov. 28, 2009.

Anna was born Sept. 28, 1918, in Mingo Junction, a daughter of Dominic and Mary Farcasso Vario.

She was a graduate of Warren G. Harding High School and received a degree in business administration and accounting.

Anna was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II, serving from May 10, 1942, to Aug. 5, 1946. Her duty stations included New York City, Washington DC, San Francisco and Honolulu. She worked at Custom Displays in Warren for two years, where she was an executive secretary, she also worked for the Neal's Shoe Store chain where she was an office manager for 29 years. In the early 1950s she also taught shorthand and typing at Warren Business School and was a substitute teacher for Champion schools.

Anna was a member and past secretary of the local USO, a member and past post commander of the American Legion Post 748, and was listed on "Women of War Memorial" in Washington, DC. She was also a member and past president of the National Secretary Association, and a member and past president of Altrusa.

Although Anna never married, her nine nieces and nephews were her children. She made sure they all learned proper social etiquette, introduced them to cultural events and provided each of them with their first plane rides.

Survivors include a sister, Elvira ''LV'' Aulizia of Warren; a brother-in-law Jerry Myers of Cortland; two nephews, Ed (Carolyn) Vario of Las Vegas and Dan (Diana) Aulizia of Warren; five nieces, Darlene Vario McGinley of Gulfport, Miss., Carol Aulizia of Warren, Terry Shuster of Cortland, Rose (Bernie) Meyer of Charlotte, N.C., Denise (Rudy) Fernandez of San Carlos, Calif. She also leaves 20 great-nieces and nephews and 28 great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Dom, Orest ''Tony'' and Ed Vario; a sister, Mary Myers, a niece, Josephine Aulizia Esau and a nephew, Frank Aulizia.

There will be no calling hours. A public committal service and interment will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Crown Hill Burial Park and Mausoleum Chapel. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel.
