Girard to host Santa Claus

The Girard Chamber of Commerce will host a VISIT FROM SANTA CLAUS arriving by fire truck at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Girard city gymnasium, 100 Main St. Santa will visit with children from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Girard Jr. Women's Club will be hosting a holiday bazaar from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the city gym.There will be homemade ornaments and crafts, crafts for children to make, food, a bake sale and gifts to purchase. A Christmas tree will be raffled off. Admission is free.

The 23rd annual SANTALAND BRUNCH will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at Vernon's Cafe with proceeds to benefit the clientele of Niles Community Services. Special guests are Santa and Mrs. Claus, elves and Grotto clowns. Face painting and raffles will be available. Cost is $11 for adults, $7.50 for children ages 4 to 12 and free to younger than age 3. Reservations are needed by calling 330-652-1381 by Thursday. Price at the door is $13 for adults and $9.50 for children.

The auxiliary of St. Joseph Hospital will hold the FESTIVAL OF TREES from Dec. 4 to 11 in the main lobby. The theme is angels.

BOOKS WITH SANTA will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the McKinley Memorial Library in Niles. Registration ends Monday. There will be refreshments and photo with Santa.

McDonald village will allow residents to rake leaves to the curb for the leaf vac to pick up. Bagged leaves will also be collected until the end of November.

The YWCA of Warren was recently awarded $20,000 from the Ridgecliff Foundation for Teaching, Educating, Advising, Mentoring (TEAM) program. TEAM prepares Warren City Schools students in grades eighth to 12th as mentors to work with at-risk fourth grade students. The goal of the program is to raise academic performance and self-esteem of students, strengthen leadership skills and develop community involvement. The program is entering its fifth year. Community Solutions Association provides programming to build self-esteem and positive refusal skills surrounding substance use.

The Northeast Ohio First Robotics Alliance LEGO League will hold a PRACTICE SCRIMMAGE from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Art Outreach Gallery at the Eastwood Mall. Each year, FLL teams of students ages 9 to14 build and program LEGO Mindstorms robots to navigate a playing field, scoring points completing a variety of theme-based missions. In December, Ohio FLL teams compete with each other at official regional tournaments held all across the state. Early next year, qualifying teams will then be invited to move on to the Ohio FLL State Championship in Dayton. The state champions will be invited to the FLL World Festival at the FIRST Championship Event in Atlanta. The FLL scrimmage will take place in the Eastwood Mall Community Room located in the concourse between Dillard's and Macy's. In addition to the FIRST LEGO League activities, area high school FIRST robotics teams will be on hand to demonstrate their robots and answer questions about high school-level FIRST programs.
