WARREN - Becky Lyda learned about the holiday blood drive being conducted by the American Red Cross Thursday morning. She decided she wanted to spend more of her holiday time making a difference.
The Warren woman, who also walked two miles in the Warren Kiwanis Club's annual Turkey Trot fundraiser, realized the American Red Cross office on Mahoning Avenue in Warren was open and people had been lining up to give blood.
"I started the day trying to donate some time and help out one way, and realized I could do this as well, so I decided to give blood," she said. "Here I am."
The local American Red Cross branch, typically closed on Thanksgiving, announced it would be open to provide area donors an opportunity to give during special holiday blood drive.
Sherry Cooper, a Red Cross medical assistant, said the turnout was better than expected, with at least 30 donors through the door by noon.
Organizers had set a goal of 21 donors, she said.
"There was a line of people waiting when we first started this morning," she said. "We were very busy. We're very happy with the turn out and how people have responded. Now we have a steady stream. We've just been trying to take care of everyone and get them on their way in time for their Thanksgiving dinners. We're very pleased with the support and very thankful."
Michael Scala, an attorney from Warren, said he started giving blood regularly after the terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001. On Thursday he saw an additional opportunity to give.
"I usually give blood every two months on a regular basis, but missed a time recently because I've been really busy," he said. "This was a good time for me to get caught up and do something good. It's something I can do to help out and maybe help someone who really needs it. I'm glad to do it."
Mark McAllister of Champion said he received a call from the Red Cross informing him that the local branch would be open on Thursday.
"I've given blood off and on over the years, but I got the call and have been wanting to give more regularly, make it more of a routine," he said. "I decided now would be a good time to get started. I'm glad I did."
