Delphi retirees eye House hearing
Tribune ChronicleWARREN - Delphi Corp. salaried retirees will get another chance to make their case for pension and health care support from the government at a House of Representatives hearing Wednesday.
U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Niles, announced Wednesday that the House Education and Labor Committee will hear testimony at 10:30 a.m. in the Rayburn Building in Washington on how deep cuts in pensions and the loss of health care are impacting salaried retirees and thousands of hourly retirees.
Ryan, Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and Delphi Packard salaried retiree Bruce Gump are among those scheduled to testify at the ''Examining the Delphi Bankruptcy's Impact on Workers and Retirees'' hearing.
Gump said he'll present much of the same information to the House that he did to the Senate committee on health, education, labor and pensions Oct. 29.
''It's another opportunity for us to get our story out, to explain to the legislative branch that we need their help to resolve the issue,'' he said.
Ryan said he's ''excited to speak on behalf of nearly 70,000 hardworking Americans, more than 5,000 of whom are in my district, whose retirement benefits are threatened by circumstances beyond their control.''
He noted Democrats were able to secure critical benefits that helped Delphi retirees as part of the economic stimulus bill that passed in February but added, ''I believe more can be done.''
More than 15,000 Delphi salaried retirees nationally, including 1,500-plus from Warren's Delphi Packard Electric, lost their health care April 1, and many will see their pensions slashed after the company eliminated the benefits during its Chapter 11 bankruptcy exit.
Also slated to lose much of their pensions and health care are members of the Operating Engineers, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and Machinists unions, which were smaller unions at Delphi.
Two larger unions - the United Auto Workers and International Union of Electrical Workers-Communications Workers of America - negotiated with former Delphi parent General Motors Corp. to restore pensions and maintain some health care, although IUE-CWA retirees face sharply higher premiums and deductibles.
Gump said salaried retirees are ''very glad'' that union workers will get their full pensions and keep some health care. All the salaried and smaller union retirees want is ''fair and equitable treatment for all worker groups.''
Ryan, who requested the hearing, has introduced legislation to set up a Voluntary Employees' Beneficiary Association to cover salaried and hourly retirees' health care. He noted he also discussed the community impact with President Obama on an Air Force One flight.

Be careful with the requests for fairness. One way to make everything equal is to reduce what other people just received rather than raise the salaried retirees up.

I wouldn't hold my breath. Timmy is useless. He's late on everything. He's just now trying to justify his flight on a private jet to Washington that he took after his FAUX health care townhall meeting.
