SCOUTING?REPORT:??Ravens vs. Browns
By MIKE McLAIN Tribune Chronicle- WHO: Cleveland Browns (1-7) vs. Baltimore Ravens (4-4).
- WHEN: Monday.
- WHERE: Cleveland Browns Stadium.
- TV/RADIO: ESPN; WNCD-WKBN (93.3 AM).
- SERIES: The Ravens have a 14-7 advantage, including a 34-3 win earlier this season.
- COACHES: Baltimore's John Harbaugh has a 15-9 career record. Cleveland's Eric Mangini is 24-32.
- ON THE GROUND: The Ravens have more than one way to defeat foes on the ground. Ray Rice is the leader with 573 yards and five touchdowns on 108 carries. Willis McGahee has 201 yards and five touchdowns, and Harbaugh can count on fullback Le'Ron McClain for the tough yards.
The Browns are inching closer to the 100-yard-a-game mark at 99.6. Jamal Lewis has a team-leading 349 yards on 98 carries but no touchdowns. Jerome Harrison is next with 254 yards on 69 carries, but again no touchdowns.
ADVANTAGE: Ravens.
- IN THE AIR: Second-year quarterback Joe Flacco continues to show that he belongs. Flacco has connected on 183-of-282 passes for 2,044 yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He likes to get the ball into Rice's hands. Rice leads the offense with 46 catches for 437 yards. Derrick Mason has 33 receptions for 452 yards and four touchdowns, and tight end Todd Heap has long been an inviting target.
Brady Quinn is back in the saddle as the Browns starting quarterback. He was benched midway through the first game against the Ravens. Quinn has hit on 46-of-77 passes for 681 yards, two touchdowns and nine interceptions. One of the receivers needs to step up. Mohamed Massaquoi has 19 receptions for 328 yards. Mike Furrey has 15 catches, but, like Massaquoi, he's yet to cross the goal line.
ADVANTAGE: Ravens.
- HOLD THAT LINE: The Ravens have shown some signs of weakening against the run, but they're still seventh in the NFL with an average yield of 94.9 yards a game. Not surprisingly, linebacker Ray Lewis leads in stops with 85. Linebacker Terrell Suggs is a distant second with 41. Safeties Dawan Landry and Ed Reed supply good run support. Tackle Haloti Ngata has missed time with an injury.
The Browns are 31st against the run in allowing 170.5 yards a game. The news didn't get any better when inside linebacker Eric Barton was put on reserve-injured with a neck injury. The defense is now without the services of D'Qwell Jackson and Barton on the inside. Nose tackle Shaun Rogers needs to have a big game to ease the burden on an inexperienced linebacker corps.
ADVANTAGE: Ravens.
- STOP THAT PASS: This is an area where opponents have had success against the Ravens, who are allowing 225.8 yards a game. Reed is one of the best in the business, but cornerbacks Fabian Washington and Domonique Foxworth can be exploited. The pass rush hasn't been as fearsome as it once was, generating 17 sacks. Trevor Pryce leads with four.
The Browns are giving up 238.6 passing yards a game. The secondary hasn't been helped by a pass rush that's woefully weak. Linebacker Kamerion Wimbley has five sacks, but offenses generally try to take him out of the game. The Browns have intercepted just four passes, including three by free safety Brodney Pool.
ADVANTAGE: Ravens.
- SPECIAL TEAMS: Ravens kicker Steve Hauschka has made 8-of-11 field goals and is a source of concern. Punter Sam Koch has a 38.3 net average. Kick returner Lardarius Webb has a 28.2 average and has taken one for a touchdown. Punt returner Chris Carr is averaging 4.7 yards.
The Browns will benefit from the return of kicker Phil Dawson, who missed five games with a calf injury. He was 4-of-4 before being hurt. Punter Dave Zastudil has a 39.1 net average and has placed 25 punts inside the opponents' 20. Joshua Cribbs is averaging 16.4 yards on punt returns and 27.7 on kick returns.
ADVANTAGE: Browns.
- PREDICTION: Ravens, 27-10.
