Son wants killer to ‘fry’

POSTED: November 10, 2009

By CHRISTOPHER BOBBY

Tribune Chronicle

The adult son of murder victim Tami Engstrom relayed a message to Ohio Parole Board members Monday, asking that they turn down any chance of clemency for his mother's murderer and simply ''fry'' Kenneth Biros.

Casey Engstrom, whose father Andy died about four years ago, delivered the message through his grandmother Pat Engstrom, who gave a statement to the parole board in Columbus at Biros' second try at clemency.

The student, who is attending classes in California, was 18 months old when Biros tortured and murdered his mother. The board is scheduled to make its recommendation public Nov. 17.

Biros is scheduled to be executed Dec. 8, but that execution is still under a stay status imposed by a federal judge while Ohio works out a new form of lethal injection.

The Ohio attorney general last week filed a motion with the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals seeking to lift the stay.

Meanwhile, Mary Jane Heiss, Tami's mother, delivered a video impact statement to the board that addressed the stress the family has been under since the murder in 1991 and since Biros' delayed execution two years ago.

She told the board that she has diabetes, uses a needle to take shots four times a day and doesn't see the need to revise the state's lethal injection protocol.

''I just wanted to stress how hard this has been on my family since we were so close to seeing him executed,'' said Debi Heiss, Tami's sister, who also delivered an impact statement.

Biros' attorneys John Parker and Tim Sweeney produced letters from family members seeking mercy for the death row inmate. And Biros himself sent a letter saying he was sorry.

But Trumbull County Prosecutor Dennis Watkins says Biros' ''lies have only gotten bigger.''

''He (Biros) remembers less than ever before. He blames Tami more than ever before. And he's not as sorry,'' said Watkins, who is irritated by Biros' latest claim that he drank so much that he ''blacked out'' and doesn't remember everything he did the night of the murder.

In October, Watkins attended a proceeding that allowed him to view Biros' latest claims in preparation for Monday's hearing.

Biros was convicted in the 1991 slaying and dismemberment of Engstrom, 22, of Brookfield, after he offered to drive her home from a bar Feb. 7, 1991. She was tortured, raped, murdered and dismembered and parts of her body were spread over western Pennsylvania and Ohio. Watkins stressed Monday there were more than 90 separate injuries to the victim's breast.

It was the second time that Watkins has argued against sparing Biros' life.

Biros, 51, came close to being executed in 2007, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the execution should be stayed to allow Biros to present initial lethal injection arguments to a panel of federal judges. Since it has been two years, the state required another clemency hearing to consider any new evidence.

Engstrom's family had traveled to Lucasville to witness Biros' execution at that point, only to learn that he was getting more time to argue against the penalty.

The stay that Attorney General Richard Cordray wants to eliminate came after the Sept. 15 botched execution of death row inmate Romell Broom, which was also delayed by a federal judge until a back-up or alternative method of lethal injection could be designed.

Gov. Ted Strickland postponed until the spring the executions of two other men who were scheduled to die before Biros.

@Bob. WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT??? NO ONE said anything about race. You are just fishing for someone to play the race card and no one is biting. The poster just mentioned that some other states don't take nearly as long to execute their death row inmates as Ohio does, and the DC sniper he mentioned just HAPPENS to be a minority, so YOU are the one bringing up race. And I wasn't even talking to you when I referenced the bible verses in SUPPORT of the death penalty so you have no business attacking me. I wasn't sticking the Bible into the conversation, but addressing the posters who mentioned forgiveness and WWJD. I'd love to talk to you in person and see if you have so many crazy things to say, seriously, not a threat, I just wonder how someone could be so off to attack someone who AGREES with you. I was AGREEING with you. Don't you get it?? You are a bitter old man.

considering what this person did to his victim, he does not deserve mercy. Or a quick humane death.

do what they do overseas, just chop his friggin head off...forget a alternate, just chop his head off, you wont have to search for a good vein either, one good swing with a sharp matchet, and it's game over, most killers on death row, are drug addicts anyway, and as long as the federal judges are "bleeding hearts" and are worried about good veins, we might as well let all killers off death row

Why are we only executing white people in Ohio? Come and say it. That is what your post says. You may be correct. I do not need to read other posts, I am capable of making my own. Keep the bible out of it. What does religion have to do with it? Should you get hit by a truck, was it your Gods will, or just stupidity for not looking? We are talking about execution not the 2nd coming. Every story is always followed by so-called made up quotes from the Bible. They should rename it: "The Good Book Of Double Meaning". If you have ever prayed, pray for common sense. Having done right or wrong, it is all justified isnt it?

"Kudos" go out to Bobcvengros, hunter and crankshaft. This is Tami's sister, Debi. I am so exhausted from this weekend, preparation so I could make sure my poor Mom was set-up while I was gone with meds, food, etc.,finding someone to stay and take care of her while I was gone for 2 days, and come back and go immediately back to work, where I can't get away from questions of concern from all of my co-workers and customers. I sell the Tribune and Vindy right at my register and I am on the front page?!!!? Someway to start a conversation. My Daddy passed, our Stepdad, Tami's husband and many more family & friends and I'm tired of Biros taking people away from me...MY PEOPLE! Makes me want to go take someone important away from him, if you know what I mean. Then see how he likes to deal with it. Thanks for all your support, really, the community is sooo awesome. Just wish we all had more of a say in matters. It's called playing "The Waiting Game". Thanks

Let his *** fry!! Personally, if someone is guilty without a doubt of something so horrendous, they need to be executed immediately. Why should our tax dollars pay for these animals for the rest of their pathetic lives? I Lost two people in my family whom I Loved very much as well by violence, and I have come to the point of no longer having respect for the system, whatsoever. It is always these animals that get the rights, not the victims, and it makes me sick!

@Bob: Read the scripture again, it very clearly says that only those who BREAK the law, should FEAR the law and even GOD accepts the punishments that earthly authorities hand down.

Do you even READ other's posts before you comment?

@Bob: I hope you're not referring to my posts, but if so, What are you talking about? My post very clearly supports the death penalty for this murderer. I said forgiveness and justice are exclusive, meaning separate. That means the family can forgive this man but he must still pay for his crime according to the law. And who is Richard?? How about you try reading my post before you criticize! Man, you just look for fights don't you? You don't even recognize when someone agrees with you. I was responding to george & WillardFilby. Good Grief!

@ Crank: Don't bother. We are both at the mercy of Bob's twisted interpretations of our posts.

Bob...where did you get that I was saying something about race.....What I am saying is where is the justise for the Fife and Engstrom families and how come it is taking so long for justise to be served when it only took 7 years to execute the DC Sniper. Where did you see race was implied in my question....get your head out of your hind end...

....life of God's creation.

I don't take pleasure in seeing a life extinguished, but our government assures the convicted of a "humane" death that even their victims were not afforded. That's more than enough compassion.

Forgiveness and Justice are exclusive. For those Christians crying WWJD?, it is the law of God that murderers be punished accordingly to maintain an orderly society. The Bible teaches to obey and submit to natural authority and those punishments that may be merited as a result of one's actions. Romans 13:3-6 "3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. 4 For he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience."

So get over this "God doesn't want us to kill anyone" stuff. It's not "killing" but justified punishment as a result of brutally taking the l

"Forgiveness"? Are you serious? The family, those affected and 90% of the public want to send these skunks to where they belong, so what's the problem? And now we have an issue with lethal injection. This is crazy (along with what our president is doing to the country, and who now touts the possibility of another stimulas). GOD HELP THIS COUNTRY!

I have a question.....Why is it that scum like Biros and Hill get to live and continually torment the families of the people they kill for almost 2 and 3 decades before they're even up to be executed, but the DC sniper is to be executed today after only 7 years. I guess I'm missing something here....They both should have been put down 10 to 15 years ago.

The family wants him to fry. So fry him already. I'd be happy to chip in for the electric bill.

Here we go again, the people want it, the State wont do it.
