Interested in learning more about gardening and sharing that knowledge with others? The Ohio State University Extension Master Gardener program in Trumbull County is now taking applications for the class of 2009.

Classes will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Wednesday for 14 weeks beginning on Feb. 3, 2010. Most of the classes will be held at the Trumbull County Agricultural and Family Center located in Cortland

Two informational meetings will be held for those interested in becoming a Master Gardener. The first is at 11 a.m. to noon on Dec. 3. The second will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Dec. 17. Both meetings will be held at the Agriculture and Family Education Center located at 520 W. Main St. in Cortland.

Interested applicants are encouraged to attend one of the meetings. Specifics regarding the application process, training schedule, course fees, and finger print requirements as well as the scope of the Master Gardener program will be discussed.

The training includes lessons in varied horticultural topics including learning the best cultural practices for growing fruits, vegetables, tree fruits, lawns, shrubs, herbs, annuals and perennials. Trainees will also learn how to identify and control plant diseases and insects. The instructors included both professors from the Ohio State University as well as certified Master Gardeners and experts from the horticultural industry. The newly trained class will be required to provide 50 hours of educational programming to the community through Ohio State University Extension in Trumbull County. Volunteer service will include providing face-to-face and telephone assistance to homeowners who request information on gardening, teaching 4-H youth gardening, community beautification projects and other community service.

Registration fee for the class is $175 payable the first class period, or may be paid in four equal installments of $43.75.
