Emil A. Hank 1922-2009
HOWLAND - Emil A. ''Sam'' Hank, 87, died at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
He was born June 11, 1922, in Sharon, Pa., a son of the late Aaron and Anna Pormia Hank.
He grew up in Newton Falls and came to Howland in 1953. He was a graduate of Newton Falls High School.
He was the owner of Hank Construction Co., specializing in custom home building for more than 50 years.
He was a member of Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church, and enjoyed fishing, hunting and woodworking. He was a member of the Fine Home Builders Association. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, three daughters and nine grandchildren.
He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II, where he served with the SeaBees in the Aleutian Islands. While in the Navy, serving in the South Pacific, he won the Golden Gloves lightweight boxing championship. He loved attending the SeaBees reunions.
Sam is survived by his daughters, Kathy A. Thomas of Howland, Nancy C. Hank of Perrysburg and Rebecca (David) Bedich of Westlake; grandchildren, Drew and Samantha Thomas, Michael Hank, Christina and Alexandra ''Ali'' Persiani, and David, Sam, Mary Kate and Jake Bedich; and his sister-in-law, Rebecca ''Becky'' Botar of Warren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Letitia ''Tee'' Botar Hank, whom he married May 25, 1952, and who died Jan. 26, 1998. He was also preceded by his parents; son-in-law, Donald F. Thomas; two brothers, John and Aaron Hank; and a sister, Eleanor Lutz.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church, with the Rev. James Barkett officiating. Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Peter Rossi and Son Memorial Chapel, where a Saracusta service will take place at 7:45 p.m., and also one-half hour prior to services Friday at the church. Burial with military honors will be at Crown Hill Burial Park.
