Reports: Browns fire Kokinis

By MIKE McLAIN Tribune Chronicle

BEREA In what could be the first sign of a major shakeup, the Browns fired general manager George Kokinis Monday afternoon.

The story was first reported by the "Orange & Brown Report" internet site. It was then picked up by other media outlets.

Neal Gulkis, director of public relations, returned a call at 8:40 p.m. He said he hadn't been told that Kokinis had been let go.

Kokinis was seen being escorted out of the building by two members of the front office, including Lewis Merletti, senior vice-president.

Kokinis was hired during the offseason to replace Phil Savage, who was fired after last season. The hiring came after the Browns named Eric Mangini coach to replace Romeo Crennel.

There were no details as to why Kokinis was let go so abruptly. Mangini is scheduled to meet with the media today at 10:30 a.m.

As a life long Browns fan, I hate to say this, but maybe we would have been better off if we would have just turned out the lights when Modell took the team to Baltimore. Here are a couple of options:

1. Since the City, not the team nor the NFL owns the "Browns" name, revoke the name and force the NFL to rename the team. Staying with the "Browns" theme, maybe call them the "T*rds" which is a much more accurate name for the team and the way they are playing anyway.

2. Stealing a page from Mike Ditka, next game day, get volunteers from local bars around the stadium to play in place of the players. Ditka told his special team players that he could replace them all with guys from any local bar and they would be better than his current special teams members. Yeah, I know, this is Professional football, but what the h*ll, it would at least be more entertaining.

Just a couple of thoughts.

I work in a clinic, and all of the people who have caught the flu say they want to live with the Browns' wide receivers because they never catch anything, lol.

Just goes to show, if you are in the $$$$, and you belong to the "CLUB" it does not matter what the fans think....look at Snyder and the Deadskins errra Redskins. The bottom line is the OWNER not the fans....what a shame.

This is terrible news! At least they kept Mangenius, he should help continue the losing ways, which makes me VERY happy. It's almost boring seeing them as bad as they are now, in fact it's kind of hard to even make fun of them anymore. What a disgrace to the NFL, cleveland s.u.c.k.s. At least they have lebron for one more year...

Purecountry495 YOU ARE RIGHT ,PURE GREED IT IS FROM THE FRT OFFICE AND THE NFL.NFL TELLS THE OWNERS WHO WINS AND WHO LOSES.LOYALITY TO THE BROWNS WILL ALWAYS BE THERE,JUST LIKE THE STEELER FANS WILL ALWAYS BE LOYAL, EVEN IF THEY STINK.I GO TO ONE GAME A YEAR. THE STADIUM HAS NOT BEEN SOLD OUT THIS YEAR.

I'm a Steelers fan, and I'd really like to see at least some semblance of a professional team in Cleveland.

Personally, I think that they hire and fire people WAY too frequently. How can you build a TEAM if they never get to bond as a team?

Players don't want to depend on each other because who knows if they'll be there next year, or even next week. They really need to stop the churn and let people get to know each other - their skills and their weaknesses.

Teams only win as a team, not as a group of individuals.

The Brown's fans are the reason they're not a good football team. If the stadium is sold out for every home game, even with a losing record why would the owners want a good football team. The current owners are just copying from Modell when he was in Cleveland. If Cleveland had a championship caliber team the owners would lose money. The players would want more money in their contracts, then the owners would lose money. I applaud the Browns fans for their loyality to Cleveland. But they need to realize that die hard Browns loyality is screwing them, big time. Look how the Browns that move to Baltimore changed after leaving Cleveland. There was no fan base, so Modell had to have a winning team to survive. Wake up and see it for what it is, PURE GREED.

Well thats goos because he was worthless anyhow. Now mangini will not be happy because that was his guy. Mangini is a Belichick and dont like being told what to do so this should get interesting. Walk him out to and bring in Marty Schotenhiemer and give Bernie kosar the off cord job and watch this team go then.
