Frank DeSalvo 1920-2009

POSTED: October 31, 2009

NEWTON FALLS - Frank DeSalvo, 89, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at Robinson Memorial Hospital, Ravenna.

Frank was born Aug. 18, 1920, in Marrero, La., a son of Nick and Lucie Absantio DeSalvo.

At the age of 17, Frank served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 322 Company of Edinburg, Va. With the corps, he served in the forestry division from Oct. 28, 1937, to March 31, 1939.

Formerly of Windham, Frank had been a Newton Falls resident since 1989. He had been employed for 27 years at General Refractory in Warren, retiring in 1993.

On May 3, 1958, Frank and Evelyn Sajniak were united in marriage. They were blessed with two sons, David and Theodore.

Frank had an outgoing personality and enjoyed the company of family and friends. He would enthusiastically use his culinary skills in preparing meals for church benefits, local sporting fundraisers and for anyone who asked for his assistance.

He was an ardent fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and a loyal fan of the Windham Bombers football and basketball teams. It was in September, just prior to his stroke, that he last attended the basketball game of his grandson.

Frank cared deeply for his family, and he was looking forward to the birth of his first great-grandchild.

He was a parishioner of St. Mary and St. Joseph Parish in Newton Falls and also a parishioner of St. Michael Catholic Church in Windham. Frank was a former member of the Knights of Columbus Council in Windham.

Memories of Frank will be carried on by his loving family, sons and daughters-in-law, David and Kathleen DeSalvo of Rootstown and Theodore and Coleen DeSalvo of Windham; grandsons, Daniel and his wife, Heather DeSalvo, and Dominic DeSalvo; brothers Anthony (Frances) DeSalvo, Jack DeSalvo, all of Windham, and Vince (Rita) DeSalvo of Champion; and a sister, Grace (Salvatore) DeBattista of New Orleans.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Evelyn, on Feb. 12, 2000.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Borowski Memorial Home, Newton Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael Catholic Church, Windham, with the Rev. James P. Lang as celebrant.

Frank will be laid to rest in St. Joseph Cemetery, Paris Township.

The family requests that material tributes be made in memory of Frank to the Windham Athletic Booster Club, 9530 Bauer, Windham, Ohio 44288.
