Schools wait for H1N1 supplies

WARREN - For those people looking to obtain their seasonal flu shots at area health departments, it may be too late.
The Mahoning and Trumbull County Health departments are reporting they are out of nearly out of the season flu vaccines, as are some area pharmacies.
People calling into the Mahoning County Health Department are learning the county's seasonal flu clinics are now closed, and the department does not believe it will be receiving any additional seasonal flu vaccine shipments for the area.
In Trumbull, the health department Monday afternoon had about five shots remaining at its office.
And that was before David Thomas of Newton Falls and his mother showed up about 2 p.m. to each get an inoculation.
The inoculation was especially important to Thomas. He said he has cystic fibrosis and is a former lung-transplant recipient.
"When someone calls or comes in, we provide the vaccination," said Selene Layton, nursing supervisor with the Trumbull County Department of Health.
The department received about half of the 500 doses of the vaccine that it ordered from the manufacturers and another 100 doses from the state. It is not known whether the second half of the order will be sent later in the season.
"We believe we received less than we ordered because manufacturers reduced their production of the seasonal flu vaccine as they began producing the 2009 H1N1 vaccine," Layton said.
Receiving half the amount it ordered was a surprise to the health department because its original order was about a fifth of the amount that it typically ordered in past years.
"In typical flu seasons, we would order enough to give about 2,500 vaccinations," Layton said. "However, over the last several years, fewer people have been coming to us for the shots, because there are so many other places they could go to get them, including their family physicians and, increasingly, drug store chains."
It is because the number of sources for vaccinations have increased, Layton believes a larger percentage of people have received vaccinations.
The owner of Franklin Pharmacy on Youngstown Road, Franklin Manios says his store also is out of the seasonal flu vaccine, but it is expected to receive more before the end of the flu season.
"We were told last Friday that we would receive a new shipment, but we don't know when we will receive it," Manios said. "We only received a partial shipment of our order. We had between 500 and 600 doses."
In regards to the 2009 H1N1 vaccinations, the Trumbull County Health Department provided a clinic last week for first responders and are expected to hold a small clinic for pregnant women and children with severe medical concerns this Friday.
Area school districts have sent letters home with their students asking parents whether they want to have their children receive the 2009 H1N1 vaccine.
"Actual clinics will not be scheduled until we receive the vaccine," Layton said.

truthmonger, A+ comment. I think the argument not getting press over this whole shi*pickle is is willingness/acceptance/enthusiasm of the main stream media in misrepresentaion of fact in the health care reform debate. Heck I saw Hannity the other night belching about how we shouldn't vaccinate kids because H1N1 vaccines haven't been tested for autism. It's a friggen flu shot, none of them are tested for autism because it doesn't cause autism. I can go on and on about Hannity, but he's just a symptom of what's wrong with journalism today. THAT is why I think there's such conflicting points of view in this debate.

As long as a bill is 1000+ pages there will always be distortion and exagerations. Nothing in the world needs that many pages to be described or managed. Keep it simple. Fix medicare. No age limit for medicare. Send in a check and be on medicare.

When its the public schools that need fixing, the conservatives' answer is privatization, make a for-profit school system to increase competition. Now when it is the privatized health care monopoly that needs fixing (too much greed), then creating a public competitor is OUT OF THE QUESTION. Some conservative tell me why? PS-don't give a ridiculous comment such as "no government run program has ever worked" because that is obviously not a premise drawn from logic.

Man, that is a tired argument. How does anyone get from reforming the way health care is paid for to "the government tell you when to die". I'd love to hear a factual explanation instead of opinion or hysterics.

How DAAAARRREEEE the elderly and sick kids get the shots first. What about the 20 something middle class white man? I don't care if the demand is outstripping supply, I want it NOOOOOWWWWLLLLLL. Bob, I don't know if you're trying trying to be contrary for contrary sake, but that's a pretty weak argument. You can't base a flu shot, mind you, that's ALWAYS in short supply to a health care bill that's still being worked on in Congress. I still don't get why stripping private insurers of unfair business practices and giving private citizens another choice who they buy their health care from is such a bad bad thing.

Right, because Obama is the one making the vaccine..****e on people, get real. Stop blaming him for things he has no control over. As for universal health care, we obviously are in dire need for it. When people have to choose to die instead of spend money they don't have on their health care, it's time to change things. There was a woman from Denmark on Oprah last week who said something like, "Why wouldn't you want your people to have health care? It's about being civilized." That's something we've never had in this country but should.
