Fact Box
The indictments
On April 15, a Trumbull County grand jury handed down the following indictments against Guy Brandon McFarland:
- 14 counts of rape, each of which carried potential life sentences because of the age of the victims.
- Six counts of gross sexual imposition, third-degree felonies that carry penalties of one to five years in prison.
- The charges specified that all counts occurred between December 2008 and March 9, 2009.
- The charges specified that the ages of the victims, all girls, were 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10.
The sentence
In exchange for McFarland pleading guilty to all 20 counts instead of going to trial, Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge John M. Stuard sentenced McFarland to:
- Concurrent sentences of 25 years to life in prison on each of the rape charges, with a minimum of 25 years to be served before consideration of parole.
- Further concurrent sentences of five years on the six gross sexual imposition charges.
WARREN - With his longer hair cut off and wounds inflicted by an angry father healed, Guy Brandon McFarland offered a simple apology before being sentenced Thursday to 25 years to life behind bars for sexual attacks on five children - all in a family with whom he lived and including two of his own kids.
The five girls ranged in ages from 5 to 10.
The 35-year-old Leavittsburg man was arrested in March after the father of one of the victims walked in on his child being raped in his home and started beating McFarland.
''I started swinging and didn't stop until Bishop got there and stopped me,'' said the father, referring to Warren Township Lt. Don Bishop, who investigated the case and wound up getting a confession from McFarland.
The father declined to be identified to try to preserve the identity of his children.
''I'll contest his release from prison in 25 years if I have to,'' the father said.
It was reported initially though that McFarland had to be taken to a hospital for treatment before he was questioned.
Bishop - outside of the courtroom - admitted it was one of the most unusual cases he had investigated.
''I started talking to the guy, thinking at first there was only one victim. Then he talks some more and it turns out there are five victims,'' Bishop said.
Trumbull County Assistant Prosecutor Diane Barber secured a plea bargain that involved McFarland pleading guilty to the complete 20-count indictment, including 14 counts of rape and six counts of gross sexual imposition that occurred between December 2008 and March 9, when the defendant was caught in the act.
All the rape charges drew concurrent sentences of at least 25 years before any chance of parole. He was sentenced to five years of further concurrent time for the gross sexual imposition charges.
''My kids are in therapy, and I'll be going to therapy. It's just one less sex offender the community has to worry about,'' said the mother of all five victims. ''We trusted him.''
The mother also wrote a victim impact statement that was read to Judge John M. Stuard in court: ''The children still have nightmares, they wake up screaming - the bad man is coming to get me!''
According to Bishop, McFarland had been living with an ex-wife, her husband and their children at a home on Kayser Road in Leavittsburg. He's originally from the Champion area and moved to the home from Georgia about seven months previous.
The couple had left the home March 9 to work on another house on Youngstown Warren Road. The husband stopped back at home for supplies and walked in to find McFarland sexually assaulting a girl.

Those of you who are blaming Guy's parents don't know Guy's parents. They are wonderful people and I grew up going to church with them. They taught us about the love of Jesus and how to learn from the Bible. I am priviledged to have known them. I grew up in that church, and the pastor is not "whacked" he loves the Lord and teaches others to follow God. Guy is responsible for his own mistakes, just like everyone else.

Jason- Even if the victim looked like Megan Fox, that does not justify victimizing her. Even if you were joking, that was unnecessary and disturbing to say.

I don't think the parents can be blamed, I don't know what his past history was, maybe they took him for counseling if he was troubled, who knows? GUY did this an adult that makes GUY responsible for his actions. He knew right from wrong! I feel sorry for the kids, I can imagine how painful it would be to live with the nightmares they do. It will probably be difficult for them to have normal relationship when they are older too. Some say the dealth penatly is an easy out, the only way justice is served here is if he is put in a cell and prisoners can do to him what he did to those children.

I also knew Guy & his family. He & his sister & I used to go to Awanas together & Christian skate night at the roller rink. I would have never guessed that this would have happened. I can't imagine what his family or the families of the kids are going through. I never saw anything that would have made me think he could do this. He just made me uncomfortable with a comment he made to me once, but nothing to this extent.

I love how some of you people are blaming Guy's parents for something he did at age 35. Amazing since none if you know them except Martywhite. And why didn't you tell anyone Marty when guy "fondled Missy" ? If you knew he was dangerous to be around why didn't you step up and say something???

I have always wondered about these kind of people. I mean, little kids and old ladies, why on earth would anyone sexually assault them?? I guess I can see why you would try something like that with a 20something, I mean, if she looked like Megan Fox and you followed her out of a bar, I could see it. But, kids??? 25 to life is too leniant. Lethal injection, there is just no curing whatever it is this guy has. Rot in h*ll pervert!!

The anti-Obama rhetoric about a Pedophile Protection Act is unbelievable. I googled the "act" and found it is made up by various groups. The actual act is S.909 a Hate Crime Bill that doesnt mention pedophiles. Instead of influencing a hate crime, these groups need to stick to the facts and tell the truth. Any person who twists the facts to imply something differant is actually lying.

im sorry but 25 years is not enough. when that time comes are we goign to read that he raped another child who could have been saved if he had not been released? how many times a week do you hear on the news about a paroled offender hurting another kid. sexual assault on a child sholuld be a death penalty offense. immediate death penalty! what they get in prison is kindness compared to what he deserves. my prayers are wtih his victims and their family.

He won't get killed in prison, he might be some ones b!tch, but he won't get killed, they will let him out for being a good boy or when he comes up for parole, they should just execute these perves who do this, it would put the kids minds at ease if they knew they could never touch them again, instead of letting them live a life behind bars, just to get out and possibly go do the same things again, it's a way of the tax payers money keeping them in prison.

The only mistake he mad was not waiting for obama to sign the Paedophile Protection Act, Which has passed congress as part of a defence bill. From now on beating his ass will be a hate crime.
