CHAMPION - A Champion Local Schools employee discovered a body Thursday morning in an area behind the soccer field on the grounds of Champion Elementary School, police said.
Police Chief Chris Redick, who was the first officer on the scene, said the 27-year-old man apparently died of a gunshot wound to the chest. Police are not identifying the victim until family members are contracted.
Police believe the victim died sometime overnight.
The body was discovered after 8:30 a.m. Redick said he does not believe any children saw the body. School buses blocked the entrance and exits to keep students away from the scene.
Fire hits KraftMaid building Thursday
MIDDLEFIELD - A late night fire evacuated a KraftMaid plant on Thursday.
The fire began about 10:30 p.m. in the receiving dock area at the rear of plant 2 and was out by 11:15 p.m., a Middlefield police dispatcher said.
Cause of the fire and damages were unavailable late Thursday. Early, unconfirmed reports said flames were shooting through a roof.
The Mesopotamia Fire Department sent 10 volunteers with an engine and a tanker. It was the only Trumbull County department at the scene, according to the dispatcher.
Cortland man sentenced in sex case
JEFFERSON - Jeffrey Bickel, 26, a former Conneaut Middle School teacher who is from Cortland, pleaded guilty to sex charges involving a student.
Bickel was accused of having sexual contact with a 17-year-old student and sending nude photos of himself to the girl's cell phone, according to The Star Beacon.
He pleaded guilty last week to two counts of gross sexual imposition and one count of disseminating material harmful to a juvenile. The charges are fourth- and fifth-degree felonies, which carry sentences of 18 and six months respectively. Sentencing will be passed later. Bickel will be labeled a sex offender and will have to register his residence.
In exchange for his guilty plea, dismissed were five additional charges of sexual battery and one count of disseminating material that carried a possible sentence of 25 years.
Bickel was hired in 2008 as a middle school music teacher and an assistant marching band director. His contract was not renewed by Conneaut's Board of Education.

To Sassysue and the others with stupid comments...I think the school system handled the situation the best way it possible. Kudos to them. As for the Tribune, at least it didn't fabricate a story. Or quote people who had nothing to do with it. I am a friend of the mother of the deceased young man and she is shattered. The last thing she needs is to hear stupid comments. Try to remember he has a mother, a sister, a father, and extended family that deserve some consideration. I realize he didn't think about the children when he took his life, but you have no idea what he was going through. Try a little compassion.

I'm in agreement with you W1LDC4T. How in the world could anybody ever plan for everything that could possibly ever happen anywhere? I wonder if Sassysue has a plan encase a body is found in her yard, a gun breaks in her door, a car runs into her house? Should I continue with the list? Anything to be critical of somebody else. How about looking at what the district and building staff/faculty did well in this situation?

I thought the Champion Local School District handled the situation in a supurb fashion. My complaint yesterday was the poorly written, 4 line, breaking news that was posted here by the Tribune Chronicle. Here is an Orchid to the administration and staff of the Champion Local School District and an Onion to the Tribune Chronicle.

Really Sassysue? How would you plan for that? They would have to have 20 plans, depending on where it was located and countless other variables. Seems like they did a decent job of trying to keep the kids from seeing anything.. I'd rather have them spending time trying to plan for situations that could potentially put someone in danger....

Really? a dead body - a murdered body - is found at an elementary is only worthy of a 'news brief'? No statement or press release from the school? No more info than this from the police? It seems like the vindicator had more info mid-day yesterday than the trib does the next day.

Why didn't the school board have a plan in place JUST IN CASE a body was found at one of the schools? Must plan ahead folks!
