Details revealed in teen shooting

Report says youths had bats, tire irons

By CHRISTOPHER BOBBY Tribune Chronicle
POSTED: October 20, 2009

WARREN - Information contained in a search warrant unsealed Monday confirms that a carload of Brookfield teens had ball bats and tire irons when they showed up Aug. 10 in the driveway of a Hubbard Township couple.

One of the teens, Robert Flynn, 15, of Masury ended up dead of a gunshot wound. The couple that lives at the home at 1628 Stateline Road is facing charges related to the death.

It's not certain whether that information gives the Hubbard Township couple a clear self-defense claim to criminal charges they face, including murder, felonious assault and evidence tampering.

Residents of the home - Karen Adams and her boyfriend Paul Sundy - were secretly indicted in the death. Adams is charged with murder and three counts of felonious assault, and Sundy faces tampering with evidence and obstructing justice charges.

The four youths in the car were reportedly confronting Sundy over an argument about one of them seeing his daughter. Someone said they heard a shot fired, and Adams claimed in a 911 tape that she fired twice in the air with a .22-caliber rifle to scare off the boys. The car then headed back to Brookfield.

Flynn was shot in the head and died later in the day at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

An affidavit sought Aug. 11 by Hubbard Township Detective Mike Begeot states that when Brookfield police caught up with the car, a 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis, they found Flynn bloody and unresponsive in the back seat and that two baseball bats were clearly spotted inside the car.

Sundy and Adams told Begeot that a verbal dispute occurred between Sundy and one of the teens and threats were exchanged before the vehicle showed up at the home, the affidavit states.

Sundy left the house to confront the four occupants of the vehicle ''who, when getting out of the car, were observed with unknown objects in their hands. Gunshots erupted and the vehicle departed,'' according to the affidavit. Police reportedly found 14 spent shell casings on the property.

The car carrying Flynn contained several bullet holes, and the warrant states Begeot and agents with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation found three spent metal projectiles in the car along with tire irons, an empty Taco Bell bag and a Waldameer Park wristband.

Begeot and state agents scoured the car for trace evidence, including taking swabs of blood splatters.

The couple remains free on bond. Adams is due back in court in front of Judge W. Wyatt McKay Dec. 9, and Sundy is scheduled for a pretrial in front of Judge Andrew Logan Oct. 27.

Reader, my sentiments exactly! Life is not a movie or a video game. It's time these wannabe thugs figured this out. People (children and adults, as well) can't tell the difference between reality and fantasy anymore.

The situation is sad. I still feel that more will be reveled that will make these little hoods look like they are more at fault than are already being brought into light. I struggle to think that anybody involved is happy the situation became what it has become. I'm disturbed that a homeowner is not allowed to protect themselves, that a child died because he didn't have the skills to pick better friends. He obviously knew that violence was on the agenda when getting into a car that contained ball bats and tire irons. Young people today have just learned the consequences are minimal until situations get out to hand. We need to start by giving them consequences for minor violations of behavior (not necessarily legal.) It might change the perception that nothing will really happen before something really bad does.

lol if i remember correctly the comments about the boys were they had no guns. Not that had no weapons...as for the police not releasing information you all are complainging about not hearing about..its a trial in progress they are not going to release information that could hinder the states case against her or the boys for that matter. Dont sit there and thing that the kids involved will not be charged with nothing. its common sense they too will be hit with some charges...the murder charge may not stick...manslaughter possibly but dont think she will not get anything out of this she lied about the shots, she lied about where the shots were fired from,and she hid he gun.

Well, Well, Well, what else can i say!!!! if you remember reading my comments on the last article they had on this saga i called it back then. The police kept on saying the kids had no weapons and so did some of the great parents of these hoodlums but now all of the sudden the police found baseball bats and tire irons, and to top it all off the police even knew about it when the punk drove his buddy to meet the police. i said all along the police was trying to cover something up.Some people were afraid to add insult to injury when the boy was killed and wanted to portray this kid as a great kid and he may have been but let me tell you like i told everyone before if they would've showed up at my house at 2 or 3 in the morning everyone of those thugs would've been dead,thats the only mistake she made was not getting all of them.You know whats even funny is the police aren't even saying what kind of bullet killed the boy.THESE THUGS ARE MORE GUILTY OF ANY CRIME THAN THESE TWO ARE! sorry

I agree with Spoon. They got what they deserved, and it's a shame more of them weren't killed. In any event, the kids definitely learned a little something that day...a little something that they obviously never learned at home.

I get the argument about protecting your property. But guess what the killers of Lloyd mcccoy used that same reasoning to justify what he did.

The difference is this how many of you would so irresponsibly to put in that situation in the first place? and this is where the killers went wrong - some by selling drugs and others carrying on this nonsense with kids.

A close look at this article may reveal a few things. 1 - The woman is charged with murder ... that is saying a lot in Trumbull County. Eugene Cumberbatch was not even charged with murder. These adults were ready and waiting on these kids based on previous exchnages they had plenty of time to cover their butts by calling the police. Their not calling shows that they were all about getting it in with these kids. 2. The grown man was arguing with kids so much so that they responded be going to the house with bats and tire irons. This is the problem with so mony kids today- they see their parents acting like fools and they think it is okay. How may readers would let an argument with a child go as far as to incite violence? totally irresponsible by parent. How can an adult get into an exchange with a child - in the middle of the night - that would result in threats being exchanged and the kids comming to carry theirs out? I mean really?

from what i am told, those kids are trouble makers and got what was coming to them. they were protecting themselves from wanabe hoodlems.

i must say that anyone losing their life at such a young age is a shame.. 14 shots being shot from a house not into one,hmmm..i guess the rural areas have something in common with inner city warren. SO SAD

Also, purecountry is right. Even if the couple called the cops, they wouldnt have got there in time and they wouldnt have done anything to the kids for going over there with ball bats. I guess if someone goes onto your property and threatens you with tire irons and ball bats that you have to wait for them to beat you unconsience and wait for someone else to call after they find you beaten to a bloody pulp.

When you go to somebodies house with ball bats what did they think would happen???????

I bet the kid that got shot wasnt even the one that wasnt allowed to see the daughter and wasnt the one that rounded everyone up to threaten the couple.

If Im correct then the kid who brought his buddy along to take care of something he wasnt man enough to handle himself, THEN THIS IS ON YOU. I wouldnt let my daughter date some punk that isnt man enough to take care of his own problems and drive around with ball bats either!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Billdog, Yeah you might have not heard it. But when you know kids that were the same age as the kids that were at that house. You get the inside story. It's pretty bad when you hear so many things, from the kids that were there telling other people what happened and why it happened.

When you want to date someone's daughter and you allegedly go after her father with baseball bats, a group of kids, and tire irons....how do you think that will work out for you? Really. Did you think about it? After you would beat up your girlfriend's father, did you really think this relationship had a chance? You made it worse for the girl and her family. Let's not forget to mention a family lost a son. You will probably get by without any charges, but that is unfortunate. You watched too many movies and played one too many video games where violence is the answer.

Things are alot different today with our younger generation than it was 20 or 30 years ago. First of all, what do you really think the cops would of done if they was called. More than likely would of told them we will talk to their parents, or call us if they come. Sorry but at 3am and a bunch of punks come to your home, your thinking about protecting yourself, your loved ones, and your property. In most cases the cops are probably out of their jurisdiction anyway, having coffee or trying to hit on some chick at a gas station or the restaurant. Just check it out and you will see for yourself. I'm not saying all cops do that, but the majority of them do. Slow response time will get you killed while waiting for them to get there. Kids today are more brazen, especially in a group. That is how most gangs get started today, by intimating people at first which leds to other activities. I feel this couple did the right thing, and probably 90% of you would of done the same thing.

cole101621, I have never heard that Robert got out of the car, nor have I heard or read that the bullet that killed Robert was a different caliber than that of the 22 that was what was shot. I have been asking the question of caliber of the weapon that killed Robert for a long time. Never any responses. If the caliber is different, what caliber is it? The boyfriend in other articles has admitting to shooting his assault rifle out on the front porch. All to much left out of the media to start drawing conclusions. Our media coverage is poor at best. I have always said that more will come out on this as time passes. I do believe that the boys did have at least one gun in the car, although that has never been stated in any article. One of these young men will get scared and tell all. There is a reason that these people went directly to their guns. It isn't because they couldn't lock their doors and hide until the police arrived. It is because they felt it was their only defense.

I'm sorry this story cracks me up. I've heard so many stories its unbeliveable.Yes, I've heard that the boys went over there to confront the mothers boyfriend. I also heard that they also had guns and weapons on them. So tell me if some one came to your house with a gun, would you still not pull the trigger just because they were young? And another thing. if she was shooting a .22 caliber...but the wound that was in Robert flynn was not the same caliber as what she was shooting..So there was another gun some where. But if you think about it. I've also heard that Robert flynn was left there & his friends left. But in this article its saying they grabbed him..think about the situation long and hard. If you knew someone was shooting would you still get out of your car and take that risk of you getting shot at?

@MARINE, SIR or MA'AM: I do not know any of the people involved in this tragedy. However, the person that 'fired' the shots could have aimed at one or more tires, as opposed to shooting into a vehicle.

Poor marksmanship or intentional? Only God knows the answer. We AGREE with you. OVERKILL.

~~~SEMPER FI. Best to you, MARINE.
First Off yes the boys are wrong But This isnt the Wild, Wild west. You call the COPS first, You dont shoot at a car in your driveway or out in the street, You protect your home if they break in your Home not parked in your driveway. A 15 yr old is Dead, because of a irresponsible person with a GUN. We have laws you dont shoot and ask questions later, 3 shots in a car, how many was fired that missed . IDIOT. Scared or vengeful. These kids will be haunted by there friend dying in front of them. We are not in Iraq or afganistan, we are not salvages. They kill just to kill. We are better then that. We are Americans we have laws, We are suppose to be a law bidding country, not kill, kill, kill. She fired the shots that killed that boy then she deserves what she gets, but most of all i hope it haunts her day & night. Dont any of you remember when we were kids we usually followed our friends right or wrong but some of us didnt get involved in there fights, thief, drug use or what ever.
From what I have read and understand, they are all at fault. At least one of the kids made threats (presumably by telephone) prior to the carload of kids showing up. The homeowners, having prior knowledge of the threats should have called the police immediately when the kids showed up (if not before when the threats first occured) and not taken matters into their own hands. If the homeowners would have stayed put inside with the doors locked and just called the police, no one would be dead. The homeowners would not be facing charges and the police would have arrested the kids for making the threats among other charges.
The bottom line is no one needed to die here. It could have been handled much better by the ADULTS (cough homeowners), so I do not feel sorry for anyone except the family of the dead boy.
