Helen Lucille McClendon Albert 1921-2009

WARREN - Helen Lucille McClendon Albert, 88, of 5803 Parkman Road N.W., departed this life at 2:35 a.m. Monday, Sept. 7, 2009, after an extended illness.

She was born March 30, 1921, in Argo, Ala., the daughter of Lumus Stanford and Marcenia Hagler, coming to the area 65 years ago.

In 1960, Mrs. Albert founded and operated Albert's Nursing Home, which later became Albert's Nursing & Residential Facility, before retiring in 1995.

She was the first black registered nurse in Trumbull County, working at the Warren City Hospital, now Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital, in 1944 and worked as supervisor of nursing at St. Joseph Riverside Hospital for 14 years.

She was a graduate of Warrior High School and Norwood School of Nursing in Alabama.

Mrs. Albert was a member of Grace AME Church, where she was a former trustee, member of the Constitution and Bylaws Committee, Steering Committee for the Building Fund, and enjoyed making ceramics and collecting artifacts. She was very active in the Warren community, belonging to the Rebecca Williams Community Center, trustee for Hillside Hospital Rehab Center, March of Dimes and Business and Professional Women's Club, just to name a few.

She was very proud of the numerous awards she was given, Honorary Mayor of the City, Outstanding Women of the World, Susan B. Anthony, Outstanding Community Service, and too many to name.

She married Eddie Albert on Oct. 6, 1944. He died Oct. 17, 1986.

She leaves to mourn a son, Frank James Albert Sr. of Warren; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Eddie Mae Albert-Broughton of Warren; one sister, Ms. Birdie Mae Sanders of Birmingham, Ala.; two grandsons, Frank Albert II and Brandon Albert; a granddaughter, Patricia Stevenson; four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her son, Alex Joseph Albert; three brothers, Adam Stanford Sr., Alexander McClendon and Henry McClendon; and a sister, Beaella Elliott.

Family will receive friends at 5803 Parkman Road N.W., the family home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace AME Church. Friends may call from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of the service at the church.

Burial will be in Pine Knoll Cemetery.
