Trumbull is seeking road and sewer funds

By RON SELAK JR. Tribune Chronicle
POSTED: September 7, 2009

WARREN - Trumbull County is hoping to get a piece of the $12 million that's available for 2010 water, road and sewer infrastructure projects in the Mahoning Valley.

But officials won't know until mid-December if their applications have been approved. Until then, they'll be meeting with metropolitan planning officials to argue that their projects should be in the mix.

In Trumbull County, the projects include a bridge replacement, sewer line installation, and road repairs and resurfacing.

Tim Yova, with the Eastgate Regional Council of Governments, said applications are due by Friday for the $6.5 million available for highway projects and $4.4 million available for water, sewer or highway projects. Also included in the $12 million is about $1 million for loans.

Later this month, officials will be given three minutes to pitch their projects. Next month, additional meetings are scheduled to develop a funding list. Projects will get final approval in November, and those awarded dollars will be invited to submit a full application for review, all but guaranteeing funding.

Projects that are not funded in communities with a population of less than 5,000 could be eligible for money from a different source. Typically, about 10 projects from those communities are selected to compete for small government grants, which are handed out by the state, Yova said.

Last year, about 80 projects were submitted for nearly the same amount of money.

In Trumbull County, the projects being submitted by the Trumbull County Sanitary Engineer's Office are:

l Phase three of the Little Squaw Creek sanitary sewer project

Gary Newbrough, of the sanitary engineer's office, said the third of five planned phases will be the installation of about 6,600 feet of sewer from Smith Stewart Road north to near Squaw Creek Country Club. It will cost about $1.9 million and include 17 businesses and 37 homes.

Work on the project's second phase, a pump station, is hoped to get under way early next year.

''Since that has already been financed, we want to push forward and get financing for phase three,'' Newbrough said.

The request is for $750,000.

l Sewer installation in Howland

Newbrough said the installation of sewer lines would connect about 24 homes in Springwood Trace, a residential development off Howland Springs Road. The application is for about $90,000.

Projects applied for by the Trumbull County Highway Engineer's Office are:

l Road resurfacing and repairs

In Southington, the plan is to widen a portion of State Road between state Routes 534 and 305 from 19 to 21 feet and make repairs to the asphalt base, said John Picuri, deputy engineer. Portions of State Road in Champion and Farmington already have been improved.

''This will upgrade (the road) from its beginning to the county line,'' Picuri said.

In Vienna and Brookfield, a portion of Warren Sharon Road from Sodom Hutchings Road to state Route 7 is scheduled for repairs and resurfacing.

Picuri said the request is for about $900,000.

l Bridge replacement in Fowler

Picuri said the bridge, located on the border of Fowler and Hartford townships, was closed in 2008 and reopened with weight restrictions on a new deck placed on the structure. The new deck, Picuri said, distributes the load from the bridge's poor beams to ones in better condition.

The request is for $400,000 for the project on Warner Road near Cortland Everett Hull Road.

First, I don't see where it says in this article that stimulas money was being used. Second, Would things be any different if McCain and Palin would have been voted into office. It's doubtful. He(McCain) is not in touch with the american people except those who have lots of cash and she'd (Palin) would have quit by now since it's not an easy job. The problem of water and sewer in rural areas is not political it's economic!!!!!

So Obama gave out all this stimulus money and yet the local government is still seeking more money. i havnt seen any benefits from any of that stimulus money. I didnt expect to see any of it personally, but Im not seeing any citizen benefit from it. Have any of you?
