Passenger: Driver was using inhalants
By DARCIE LORENO Tribune ChronicleCHAMPION - A 17-year-old South-ington girl had inhaled aerosol just before a crash that killed her and injured two of her friends earlier this month, according to reports.
Christie Manchester had a blank stare on her face and clenched the steering wheel just before driving off the road into trees minutes after she, Ellen Becker, 18, of Struthers and Kaylynn Barco, 17, of Southington, purchased the can of compressed air at Wal-Mart to get high, according to witness statements.
While toxicology tests for Manchester are not yet complete, crash reports released by the Ohio State Highway Patrol on Tuesday included the details told to them by Barco during interviews after she was released from the hospital four days after the Aug. 3 accident.
The crash occurred just before midnight as the three were heading west on State Road just west of Old Colony Road. Manchester was driving, Becker was in the back seat and Barco in the front passenger seat. The 1994 Pontiac Grand Am went off the right side of the road and hit a tree.
Manchester was pronounced dead at the scene. Barco was taken to the hospital and later released, and Becker remains hospitalized and in intensive care, according to police.
Initially, police said Barco had told them the three had been on their way home from Speedway, 4504 Mahoning Ave. N.W. But during her interview, she said they were headed there, then decided to instead go to Taco Bell on Elm Road.
Barco told police that Manchester instead drove to Wal-Mart in Bazetta to buy cigarettes. Barco told police Becker purchased the cigarettes, a pack of gum and an aerosol can of air duster and that Manchester said they would be able to get high from the inhalants in the can. They are seen on surveillance video purchasing the can, reports said.
According to the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, inhalants are sniffed, snorted, bagged, or "huffed" (inhalant-soaked rag, sock, or roll of toilet paper in the mouth) to achieve a high.
They can include glue, nail polish remover, cleaning fluids, gasoline, spray paint and cooking spray.
After heavy use, abusers may feel drowsy for several hours and experience a lingering headache. Prolonged use can cause loss of consciousness and death.
The three then went to Speedway, she said. When they left, Manchester asked for the can at the intersection of State Road and North Leavitt Road and inhaled "a few bursts of the air duster" as they drove from the light, reports said. Barco said she grabbed the can because she "did not feel right about Christie getting high while driving."
Manchester told her to take a hit, and Barco said she did before spitting and coughing the substance out. Manchester then grabbed the can and ingested a few more bursts before Barco took the can back, according to reports.
As they were driving, Barco said she and Becker were laughing at Manchester because she appeared to be getting high. At one point, however, she looked at Manchester and saw she had a blank stare on her face. Barco said she put her hand on her shoulder and asked if she was OK, but said Manchester's muscles were tensed. They then went off the road, reports said.
A witness driving behind the girls said there did not appear to be anything in the roadway Manchester would have attempted to swerve around and that they did not appear to be speeding.
"Sometimes it's alcohol, sometimes it's drugs," said Lt. Joseph Dragovich of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. "Probably sometimes it's cell phones. These are all things we look at and consider, and it just so happens they had that can in the vehicle. We did have one passenger we could talk to tell us what happened and that that's the behavior they were engaging in."
Dragovich said the can had a warning label saying it could cause instant death if inhaled.
"And I don't know what's so appealing about that. It's chemical Russian roulette because you just never know," said Dragovich. "This is in every sense of the word (a tragedy)."
Trumbull County Coroner Dr. Humphrey Germaniuk said huffing sensitizes the heart and can predispose one to heart arrhythmias. It can result in anything from a buzz to a rush to an altered state of mind, but the effects are different for everyone. Huffing can result in instant death and brain damage due to a lack of oxygen.
"The bottom line is it is an extremely dangerous practice," Germaniuk said.
Germaniuk said the toxicology test results for Manchester, which were sent out just after the crash, would take six to eight weeks. Dragovich said police also sent a sample for testing and that the tests usually take about three to four weeks.
Dragovich said Becker is still in intensive care and has no feeling from her waist down. Germaniuk previously said Manchester died from a head injury.
The Becker and Manchester families could not be reached for comment Tuesday. After initially wanting to comment, the Barco family did not return phone calls Tuesday evening.

wow after going through and reading these comments its amazing how rediculous people can be. Acting like they don't make mistakes and like everything they hear is true. Even if these girls did "huff" it was a mistake and are paying for it, but even if they didn't they still lost someone and its something they may never heal from. Those of you who want to know the status of ellen its ***********caringbridge**** go to visit then to ellen becker. gives you a day by day status of her. please pray for the families and just think about what you say, remember these people have a long time of healing. oh and by the way jp im praying for your sister too.

You people are insane. I went to Chalker High School with the brothers of two of the girls involved in the accident. Also, I am and have been friends with Kaylynn on Facebook for quite some time. There were NEVER any photos of Kaylynn, her friends, or her brother "huffing". Someone obviously posted this comment to start rumors. Grow up, people. A young girl is dead. Two others are grieving over the loss of their friend. Show a little respect. Regardless of who did what, we ALL made mistakes when we were young. Kids experiment with things. Does that make it right? No. But Kaylynn and Ellen are dealing with their mistakes. Adding fuel to the fire with your rumors is immature and stupid. Everyone that has teenage children or has been one themselves knows that you can teach kids right from wrong, but you have little to no control over what they will do when you are not around. Think about the families that you are hurting with your comments.

I have taken my share of calls for accidents and deaths none of them are the same but it doesnt make it less meaningless. I know the Barco's they are a typical family with typical children, they are good people. We all make choices in our lives, some we cannot turn back from and some we can learn from. Everyone made their choice that night and each will have to deal with it, although some of the families a little more than others. My prayers go out to them in this difficult time. Kaylynn, you were spared for a reason, take this and do some good as I know you will. The negativity that you hear are those who want to blame or just plain and simple ignorant. Remember who you are and what you can be. Live..Learn and Make something of yourself.

It is pretty apparent who I am. With that being said nobody around me regardless of who it is would ever have the ability to "huff" or do any other drugs, especially my little sister. For you to say that I or anyone else that has been to my house is or was high is ridiculous. First of all, I have entirelly too much respect for my parents to allow those activities to occur. Secondly, through my college medical classes, we've learned exactly what happens to the brain when drugs are used...not a pretty sight. So for anyone to accuse me of touching any drugs shows their lack of intelligence first off and ignorance for talking about someone they don't know. I would appreciate it if you all would keep my name out of your mouths. And as for my sister Christie and Ellen, none of them have ever even tried anything like that in front of me, because had they tried it would have been the last time they did it, knowledge is the answer to ignorance, I'm just sad this had to be the w

How dare any of you people judge anything that happened... I have been close with this family for a long time, and it seems the same people (truthful) seem to have a lot to say about Kaylynn and her family since basketball season. And as far as her and her older brother, if you weren't there for this "huffing" party, keep your mouth shut. It's sad that you sorry people have nothing to do but bash a young, AWESOME girl that needs to heal. Instead of making up stories in your head, why don't you guys all pay attention to your own lives for a change :) Get better Ellen, and I love you Kay.. muah :*

AGAIN, I don't see Barco shifting blame anywhere, nowhere does she say I was kicking and screaming for her to let me out of the car, she admits to laughing, she admits to putting it to her mouth, exactly WHAT does she have to explain. That she made a bad decision that will never leave her mind because it ended in tragedy. Looks like you are all quick to blame as well, I don't see ANYWHERE where Barco is shifting blame on anyone. This is a YOUNG, BEAUTIFUL, woman who made a bad choice. She also needs your prayers as this incident will forever remain in her heart.

I am terribly uspet with Kaylynn I went to school with Kaylynn and Christie, and it is ashame that kaylynn would do such a thing. about a month ago kaylynn posted a new photo album on her facebook, pictures of her, and her older brother as well as a few other friends, high from "huffing", and yet in her statement she said she TRIED it the night of the accident and did not like it??? I know that she did not just try it!! i am not saying Christie did not do anything wrong, bc she was "huffing" that night but she did not post photos up for the world to see of her high as a kite now did she.. and if kaylynn is lying because she doesnt want to get into trouble, what is worse kay getting rounded, or being dead. Christie's older brothers, her dad, her mom cant ground her for her mistakes, and i am sure they wish they could, but just because she cant get into any trouble doesnt mean you need to point the finger to her... for crying out loud she was your best friend!!!! it

there are only 3 people that know the truth about what happen and one of them isnt able to tell her side. i believe everything happens for a reason no one quite knowing why right now but it opens your eyes parents talk to your kids so they are aware of the consequences as for the farmer girl and project kids comments they are all kids and before you wish bad for others you should think what would your child have done in that situation is yours perfect are u 100% sure your child would never do anything to put them in danger? my prayers go out to the manchesters for their loss, and to the girl still fighting and barco just tell the truth

Not only do we all need to train our children to fasten their seatbelts everytime they get into a car, we also need to educate them about the dangers of huffing. Thanks to those who posted the facts and the websites on this subject. Continued prayers for the families of the girls and Ellen's recovery. According to Buckle Up For Becker on Facebook and reported by Ellen's father, Ellen has opened her eyes wide and seems slightly aware, that is the last update I read.

I was wondering what the status of Ellen Baker is. I know it says no feeling from the waste down, but is she awake and aware of what happened? Is she making any progress? Hopefully at least her portion of the tragedy can end with her full physical recovery. My prayers are with all the people and families involved.
