Man pleads to charge in electrocution case

BROOKFIELD - The Farmdale man who police said was involved in an apparent copper theft at an electric substation in Gustavus that left one man dead pleaded guilty Thursday to complicity to theft.

Charles Fisher originally was charged with complicity to aggravated trespassing and complicity to theft, charges he pleaded not guilty to last month.

Police previously said they believe Fisher was with Robert Eakin, who was electrocuted after he sawed through an electrical connection at a substation at the intersection of Gardner Barclay and Stoddard Hayes roads in Gustavus early June 29.

Trumbull County Assistant Prosecutor Sean O'Brien said it was determined Fisher had driven Eakin to the substation and that their intent was to steal copper. When the electrocution occurred, Fisher left, O'Brien said.

Fisher's sentencing will be later this month in Eastern District Court.

Two injured in motorcycle crash

AUSTINTOWN - Two people were injured after a motorcyclist crashed into a stopped car on Pinecrest Avenue Wednesday night.

Police were called to Pinecrest Avenue just west of South Inglewood at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

John A. Cordeiro, 36, of Brookfield, had stopped his Ford Taurus to turn into a driveway on Pinecrest Avenue. Motorcyclist Bret D. Warrick, 19, of Pinecrest Avenue, tried to pass Cordeiro's car and crashed his Yamaha motorcycle into the car as it was turning.

Both men were taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center with what police described as non-incapacitating injuries.

County to place CSB renewal on ballot

YOUNGSTOWN - Mahoning County Commissioners agreed Thursday to place a 1-mill renewal for the county Children Services Board on the November ballot.

CSB Director Denise Stewart stressed the levy is a renewal and said the recent spate of child neglect and abuse cases in the county shows that the money is needed for the agency to do its job properly.

Already, commissioners voted last week to place a 0.5 percent sales tax on the ballot as a continous measure, and voters may be asked to vote on a levy for the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. That decision has not yet been made.
