WAUSAU, Wis. - Arthur S. Filomena, age 87, passed away at Hospice House in Wausau, Wis., on Wednesday, June 24, 2009.
Art was born April 15, 1922, in Niles, the son of Antonio Filomena and Antoinette DiBernardi Filomena.
He was a graduate of Niles McKinley High School, class of 1940.
He served in World War II in Company H, 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division in Southern and Northern France as part of the Normandy Invasion force. He received several medals, including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, World War II Victory Medal and Honorable Discharge Emblem. He was member of the Disabled American Veterans.
After discharge from the military, he worked in civilian service for 20 years, first for the Army at the Lordstown Military Reservation as a supervisor and Programs Analyst, and for the Vienna Air Base, Air Force 910th Troop Carrier Group, Youngstown Municipal Airport. He retired on May 18, 1966. He then worked for ITT Grinnell, Warren, for 10 years as security supervisor until his retirement in 1978.
In retirement, he was an avid gardener, moving to the country to have more space to pursue this interest. He also enjoyed woodcraft, sketching, painting and restoring antique furniture. He will be most remembered for his tough spirit, his soft heart and his winning smile.
His wife Mary Carl Filomena, whom he married Nov. 21, 1944, died March 12, 1998.
He was also preceded in death by sisters, Vera Sabatini, Victoria Patrella, Carmella Ambriola and Sylvia Scarmuzzi; and brothers, James Cuccarese, Joseph Cuccarese and Vincent Philomena.
His family includes a daughter, Toni Reinhart, and her husband, Rick of Wausau, Wis.; grandchildren, Richard Reinhart of Raleigh, N.C., and Antoinette Marie Miller and her husband Keith Miller; and great-granddaughters, Mary Antoinette and Alexandra Marie of Atlanta, Ga.
Friends may call 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at The Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Niles, where the Mount Carmel Bereavement Ministry will conduct prayers at 4:30 p.m.
Funeral Services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Niles with the Rev. Thomas Kraszewski officiating, preceded by a 9:30 a.m. prayer service at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Niles City Cemetery where Art will be honored for his military service by the Trumbull County American Legion Honor Guard.
