Study: Third of households in poverty

POSTED: June 8, 2009

Tribune Chronicle

YOUNGSTOWN - A research project that examined the Mahoning Valley's economic health is being released Tuesday.

It found that nearly a third of local households live below the poverty level, nearly 40 percent of local households are "asset" poor; small business ownership is less than half of the ownership rate in the rest of the state; and only about a 10.4 percent of all Youngstown adults have a four-year college degree.

Complete results of the report are scheduled to be released Tuesday by the Raymond John Wean Foundation.

On the more positive side, the survey also found that the region is becoming more ethnically diverse with a nearly 7 percent Latino-population; the Mahoning Valley holds its own in the creation of microenterprise ventures; and area adults and

children are more likely to have health insurance than people living in other parts of the country.

The Wean Foundation commissioned the report in partnership with JB Morgan Chase and Turning Technologies Inc. The survey was done by the nonprofit Corporation for Enterprise Development of Washington.

The purpose of the study was to assess the status of various economic factors proven to drive a region's economy.

Factors include income, savings and assets, access to financial institutions, education, home ownership, racial diversity and other factors.

How funny can ya get..I mean, all you can miss about your hometown is a stale smelling gin mill or two and a very uneventful pizza. I will give the HD Shoppe its due..They rock the chile dog world.

Pahootaman, my brother misses the same. He has lived in Florida and Georgia since early 80s and when he was here a couple of weekends ago, he had to get hot dogs and Sunrise pizza to take back to Georgia with him. Used to stop at Crystal Inn when in town, but since that burned down, now it's just the dogs and pizza.

Gee what a suprise! Like pahootaman, I too voted with my feet and left in 1985. I was just back last week due to visit my 80 year old parents who are now too ill to move. Depressing does not do the area justice. The unions and the mob got what they wanted; total control over the area and now, who cares. Way too many years of worshiping High School Football stars that rarely made it to college, and if they did, got booted because they weren't getting their butts kissed anymore. Un motivated, un educated morons that just assumed they would get a job in a local factory like their daddy did. Now the factories are gone, never to return again. Sorry, but if the Warren Youngstown area had started out with a specific plan in the late 1950's to run the area into the ground, they couldn't have done a better job.

Message to the Trib: Lets be sure the report properly identifies where the statistics are from - regional valley, that includes Trumbull and Mahoning counties, vs the generic Youngstown (as referenced for college degrees) Vastly differnt. What was the charter of the study ?

Not being able to afford cable, a playstation 3, your smokes and lott habbit, and that steady diet of fast food and expensive lifestyle in order to maintain 'status' should not dictate whether or not you are in poverty...couple those unessesary 'wants' with a poor work ethic, and you will most certainly be poverty stricken..

I think that if this poll were to integrate these statistics, that you would find that living above that poverty line, isn't too hard after all..

Keep working people, million of those who make bad financial decisions daily and refuse to have good work ethics depend on YOUR tax dollars!

Lack of opportunity and brain drain. Can't say I helped, I moved out after college. I miss the hot dog shoppe and Sunrise though, probably the only reason I would ever visit.

It also doesn't surprise me about the small business statistic. The government smothers any hopes of a business' success in taxes. When I was trying to get my business to grow, I often found that the government was making more money on my efforts than I was. It just wasn't worth it, so I practically shut it down.

Although there are a few redeeming qualities about the area, it is economically the armpit of America.

Just confirms what we all have been thinking, the Mahoning Valley is dying a slow death from the union caused economic flu.
