A little bit of everything

May 3, 2009
By ED PUSKAS Tribune Chronicle Sports Editor

Random thoughts, while wondering why any of my Facebook friends would actually care to know my five favorite television shows as a kid:

I didn't think so, either. It's the first round. The NBA playoffs are so long, nobody is going to remember anything about the Bulls and Celtics by June. They'll both be long gone.

Developing good fighters seems to involve more of a leap of faith. Sometimes it pays off when a Kelly Pavlik or Billy Lyell turns the corner. But how many boxers are there we never hear about because they end up being ordinary? And when does the difference between the ordinary and extraordinary become clear?

Sometimes people are fixated on size and arm strength in evaluating QBs. Brian Sipe wouldn't even sniff the NFL today, and he was an MVP for the Browns.

Of course, as the son of a coach and the product of a college program run by a coach with a clear appreciation for the game's fundamentals, Robiskie shouldn't have been surprised.

Does anyone really believe it should?

Trumbull County high school athletic directors are reminded that it's time again to submit nominations for the Tribune Chronicle's annual Athlete of the Year awards. Letters and nomination forms went out last week. The nominees will be announced in the coming weeks, followed by stories about the winners - one boy and one girl.

As always, award recipients will be selected by members of the Tribune Chronicle sports staff, including yours truly.

Actually, those lists of favorites seem so irrelevant. It's almost like posting the top-five fantasy baseball teams you've ever had, or the top-five golf shots you've ever hit.

Who cares?

Well, somebody must, because I'm pretty sure the guy who invented Facebook lights cigars with $100 bills and owns his own island.

It might even be Fantasy Island, another classic from yesteryear.

Smiles, everyone. Smiles.
