SOUTHINGTON - James Reed Bates, 74, of Southington, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 15, 2009, after a year-long battle with leukemia.
He was born June 20, 1934, in Hartford, a son of the late Charles L. Bates and the late Ruth Chilson Bates.
James married Janet Nelson on Sept. 12, 1959.
He was employed at Copperweld Steel Corp. for 32 years, retiring in 1986.
He was a veteran and served in the Army.
James was a member of Trumbull County Guernsey Club, Trumbull County Farm Bureau, Ohio Guernsey Breeders Association and The American Guernsey Cattle Club.
Surviving are his wife, Janet N. Bates of Southington; two daughters, Cindy Bates and Lorrie Dietz, both of Southington; two sons, Scott Bates of Columbus and Mark Bates of Champion; brothers, Robert M. Bates of Hartford, Charles ''Bud'' Bates Jr. of Cleveland and David Bates of Vienna; and granddaughters, Ashlee and Amber Dietz and Nikki Bates. He will be sadly missed by his faithful dogs, BJ and Dozer.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Donald.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Carl W. Hall Funeral Home, Warren. The Rev. Rod Meyer will officiate. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Crown Hill Burial Park.
