VIENNA - Light snow and freezing temperatures Sunday evening proved to be a dangerous mix on area roads as numerous crashes were reported, including a fatality on state Route 11.
The Warren Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said Alyssa Emrich, 17, of Youngstown, died after her 1989 Mercury Cougar collided head-on with a Johnston Township ambulance just before 7 p.m. The crash occurred on state Route 11 in the area of King Graves Road.
The patrol said Emrich was traveling south on Route 11 when she lost control, traveled through the median and struck the northbound ambulance head-on. The ambulance continued north a short distance before landing on its left side facing south, while Emrich's car came to rest in a ditch.
Emrich was pronounced dead at the scene. The ambulance driver, Jessica Gardener, 30, of Farmdale, and a passenger were taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center with non-life threatening injuries, the patrol said.
The crash remains under investigation.
About the same time, numerous crashes were reported on Route 11 near Interstate 80, including a semi truck that jack-knifed. As many as a dozen cars were involved in a crash on Interstate 80 near state Route 46 in Austintown, which shut the road down for about an hour, according to the Canfield post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The state Route 711 connector also was the scene of numerous overturned semis and cars that ran off the road. The Trumbull County 911 Center said the Ohio Department of Transportation was called out about 7 p.m. to salt the roads.
